I've got that exact steering wheel on my '66 and I love it (compared to the dry rotted, cracked wheel I replaced!). It was easy to install - but it sits a bit closer to the driver because it installs with a universal adpater kit.

I purchased my wheel through OPGI - it was on-sale for $95 bucks or so. Right now, it's available for around $120 - check here:

Steve O - just checked out your '66 - that's a nice ride. That steering wheel would look great in that car. If you ever want to trade your car for one that's begging for a restore - let me know!

Thanks it...I'm going to buy some of these and sell them on ebay. I could finance at least part of my '67 restore through this deal. They always (at least for the last year that I,ve been watching) sell for 150+ on ebay. You can buy them for around $100 if you look around.
I have one and I really like it.

The ebay wheel says its wood, and the OPG one is "simulated". Do you think the ebay wheel is real wood?
Also, would the OPG one work with the tilt column?
And I actually like the fact that it would sit closer to the driver....I had my driver's seat re-mounted about 5 inches back. I'm 6'6 and needed the legroom!
And thanks for the compliment on my car, Dan! But I'm not quite ready to part with it!

I didn't realize the OPGI wheel said, or was, simulated. I'll tell you, if it is simulated - I couldn't tell you. If you read further down in the description, it says "hand-lathed walnut wheels" I've had my wheel on since November and I thought it was real wood! The "simulated" may mean the wood is not actually wrapped around he aluminum. It has a "top" and a "bottom" piece that sandwich the aluminum.

Anyway - the one on e-bay looks exactly like the OPGI wheel. You should give OPGI a call and find out the scoop - and e-mail the ebay seller and ask who makes the wheel - my guess is it's the same as OPGI . . . I believe the regular price of the OPGI wheel is around $150 or so - which is around the e-bay price. OPGI is in Long Beach - you could always swing buy and take a look - it'd be a nice ride in that 'vert.

BTW - I'm 6'5" and have not yet moved my seat back - although I like the idea of doing so - sometimes I feel like I'm driving a kid's go-cart in my '66. Is there any room between the driver and back seat????

Grant makes this wheel. It's real wood.
The original style wheel is a plastic that looks like wood. It is alot more expensive, but it is the original style. Almost all GTO parts companies sell both of these wheels.
Last I looked at OPG it was on sale for 109.95

I moved the seat back on both my Camaro and GTO....and its absolutely amazing! Look at my Camaro pics to see the bolted-in rails. Same as the GTO. Both these cars are extremely comfortable to drive now. The rails are bolted into the existing seat mount holes, so if you ever want to reverse it, just unbolt them and put the seats back in and its completely original again. This mod is well worth the effort for us tall guys. Completely transforms the driving experience. You'll never want it any other way again. Not much legroom behind the driver's seat left...but who cares? You could still move it up a little for the few times someone rides back there. I don't really haul anyone back there anyway. Besides, its MY car!
And, yes, I will call OPG. I really want that "wood" steering wheel. It will look awesome with the wood dash.

Pecosbill: I've seen this wheel in other locations as well - but don't recall whether the prices included the adapter for your particular model - usually a $25 or so addition. OPGI will provide you with the correct Grant adaptor for your year/model.

my 2 cents -- looks like the Grant 987 wood wheel I installed this past week in my 66 convert. I had called Grant Products and they don't sell retail and referred me to Summit Racing where I bought the wheel along with install kit 4193 because I have a tilt wheel, but I think from what the Grant reps had told me earlier that kit does both tilt and non-tilt. Paid 105.99 for the wheel and 18.95 for the kit plus handling etc for total of 133 and change. When installing it we had to drill holes in the old cancel cam so the wheel would sit "square" and had to remove the Pontiac emblem, its just stuck on the wheel, used a knife to slide behind it and peel it off and then just stuck it back on, so that when the horn cover was installed and turned 1/3 turn to seat it, per the instructions, the emblem was straight, otherwise it would have been off about a half turn. The other issue after installation is that the signal turns off correctly on a left turn but the turn has to be completed and the car going straight before it cancels on a right turn. Contacted Grant and the tech rep (Joey Ferrari -- think that's a real name ?) replied that on older GTOs they have noticed the cancel cam problem. He recommended buying a cancel cam from a 68 or so vintage Chevy to solve the right turn cancel problem. That said, I love the look and feel of the wheel --- and being 6'6 myself was interested in the comments about the driver seat being slid back -- had wrestled with putting in a power seat, but no courage to go that rad -- even though the car has tilt, remote mirror, power antenna and power windows. Sorry for the long post, gonna be gone for a week or so, so if you ask me for a reply or to take a seat on the sidelines I won't be back in the saddle til' after the Holiday weekend. Being fairly new to the forum, I also want to say a big "thanks" for all of the great posts --they really help rookies like me.
