I'm helping a friend of mine with a 68 Firebird, both newbies, and we've encountered some brake problems. The rear wheels are locking before the front. This is a drum brake car. Can anyone help me with this. Just installed new shoes on all 4 corners and changed the brake fluid. Could air in the system be the cause or is it something more severe? Any info may help

If the rears drums have gone out of round too much (normal wear can cause this)you can get a grab & lock up, instead of a smooth braking action. You will need to machine or replace them if this is the cause.

We first changed the rear shoes, then drove a bit, and changed the front. Didn't get the parts at the same time. We've been told that the problem is caused by the front linings beeing new and therefore no good before beeing used a bit. Is this true?

It is definately NOT due to the front linings being new. Could be they are not adjusted out propery though.
While car jacked up and spinning a front wheel adjust the star wheel (brake shoe expander) until a slight drag is felt, then repeat on other side. From there the self adjusters will take over. Also make sure rear shoes are not too tight. Quick check is with the parking brake. It should go down at least half way when shoes are proper adjusted. Also if it goes all the way down the rear shoes are too loose! The most likely cause is that the rear wheel cylinder is leaking and got the shoes wet. This is common when changing shoes as the wheel cylinder cup seals are in a rusty/pitted area of the cylinder bore where old moisture contamiated fluid has been. If this is the case do not bother with a rebuild kit, buy a new cylinder. DanC
