The machinist who I think I want to port and do a valve job on my heads is strongly recommending Isky or other springs rather than the #995's that I already have. He says even tho mine are brand new, he just thinks all Comp Cams springs "suck" because he says more than once they failed on him during break-in or with only a few runs on the engine.

Anyone else ever heard this or is he just trying to sell me something I don't really need? I think he is being honest about not liking them, but maybe he was just unlucky a couple times and everyone else has them working fine??

(Yes the #995-16 are the ones recommended for the cam I want, matter of fact they are recommended for most all Comp Cams that have higher than stock rpm ranges and up to .550" lift; both hydraulic and solid flat tappets.)

I have had no problems with the comp 995-16. Using on 255/266 solid comp cam. Sometimes Engine Builders just have their own favorite brands just like any others. Rich

CompCam is a huge company that successfully designs and builds cams and valve train components for millions of performance applications. I have the 995-16's in my over 6,000 rpm 428 and have no problems.
Your guy is telling you not to use them and it does not matter if he wrong, to help him stand behind his work go with his recommendation... springs is a small part of an engine build.

I've used them and never had an issue with them either. Perhaps your machinist just had problems with one or two sets of Comp springs. Did you ask him what type of spring and what application they were used?

If he had problem with the spring going away after break-in......then apparently he doesn't know how to heat cycle and break-in a competition spring.

Ran em, run em. No issues. But like anyting else there are better springs, just cost more.

I had 4 sets of Isky springs fail way back during short track racing and in the heat races. Not the cheap roller ones either, there G.N. springs.
Isky is not on my I'll use list. LOL.
Have used Lunati, and Crane no issues either.

I've had great luck with Isky stuff, my brothers BBC runs them too. Had some Comp 995's in a friends engine and it hit valve float on the dyno at 6000rpm. Never much cared for Comp stuff, some people love it though.

The only problems we've had with the Comp springs is the dampners cutting pretty hard into the shims. Also a good idea to check the pressures, some sets have deviated some from the advertised specs, good practice to always check any spring with the retaining that is going to be used.....Cliff

We've installed no less than 50 sets of 995s in the past three years. Zero failures, zero prblems. When all else fails, follow instructions! I must agree with the previous statment about Comp. they have the most complete and compatible valve train components in the industry. Not only that, they have come to understand the Pontiac and Pontiac lovers in recent years.

Your machinist is just trying to make extra bucks on you. The 995 springs are one of Comps very best products for Pontiacs. SURE, ISKY IS GOOD, BUT AT ANOTHER 100+ BUCKS AND THE SAME QUALITY. Use what you have. Just make sure the installed hieght is right.

It really goes back to you can ask 10,000 machinist how to machine something and you will get 10,000 different answers.

I agree with Ken. As an engine builder ,I to, have my own preferences. I have used many of Comp. springs on many different types of engines from street to race, even the popular 995's for the street Pontiacs, with no problems. I find they may be a bit light on the pressure side as per their recommendations, so I just add a little more shim, but never had any failures. If he insists on not using them, bring them to someone who will. Why should you have to shell out the extra bucks for a spring that will do the same job when you already have these?
