I also posted this in the 68-69 GTO section but have had no response, so I'll try it here ...

I'm stumped. Have a 69 GTO with a 70 motor. Just redid the motor and ordered new March Pulleys and all 70 correct brackets for Alternator and P/S pump, along with new P/S pump. The guy that had it before me had a bracket that was not even correct for a Pontiac. He also had the tear drop style p/s pump instead of the correct banjo style. Anyway, the crank and water pump pulles align perfectly and the Alternator pulley can be aligned with a spacer no problem. My problem is the P/S pump pulley. It is about 1/4" too far back toward the motor. As I said, I am positive I have the right aluminum bracket that bolts to the head for a 70 motor - actually the same bracket was used from at least 68. I am stumped as to why the pulley is so far off.

Anyone have this problem or know what it could be? I'd hate to have to shim the bracket against the head to pull it forward.

I have a 70 Goat with a March set of pulleys on. The stock 70 pullys lined up perfect (73 block)My waterpump and crank were perfect. The alternator and steering were out about 1/4 inch. I just shimmed them out and they work find. Shift at 6000 at the track and havn,t thrown a belt. I also have a set of Rodney Reds and they fit the same. They are on the stock 400 (70 block)

Thanks 02Hawk - guess I'll just shim the bracket out from the head on the block about 1/4" - It doesn't look bad. Just couldn't figure out why the stock bracket didn't want to work. Glad to hear someone else had the same situation.

I have the same problem as well except I have a 73 455 in a 68 Firebird, I too did the March pulley route which now the crank, alt and w/p align perfectly, however the p/s still does not align properly. It is just like you said a 1/4 inch off the mark. But if I shim this from the block then my alt will be off but the p/s will be aligned, what a .........
