As of October 1st, all new IA2 engine blocks will feature the main caps registered in the pan rails. They will no longer incorporate dowel pins. The pan rails have been raised .125" in order to register the main caps, which will be a better, stronger way to help minimize any main cap movement as much as possible, especially with high rpm/ high horsepower combinations. By doing this, the blocks will now need a longer oil pump drive, which will be included in the block hardware kit that is being sold by ALLPONTIAC, Spotts Performance, Maximum Race Engines, and anyone else that will be selling the block.
To those that do not know by now, each block now incorporates screw in style freeze plugs. These screw in type plugs will also be included in the same hardware kit. The block hardware kit will include everything needed to prep the IA2 block. Joe Pontiac Maximum Race Engines www.maximumraceengines.com [email protected] |

I can see the benefits of the outer edge of cap register for locating the cap. Several different production blocks have come that way. My concern would be the cap wanting to pull inward under high leads like a rod cap does. Maybe this is not an issue as the main caps are so much larger (stronger), made from
better steel, and the crank wanting to "orbit" around the whole main cap under high rpm conditions vs the rod cap seeing high inertial (tension) loads at the same rpm. On the race blocks Jimmy Keen ran (Production Race blocks from Ford) we machined registers in the block webbing for each main and had custom caps made with "tangs" vs dowel pins/ outside registry like is being reported. NO fretting, no block issues after that on the Keen stuff. Hope it works well. Some one is thinking. Tom V.

Allpontiac.com looked at the other brands of motors out there that have caps registered in the block. This was done because dowel pins are old technology. High speed film as shown caps can dance around in a block. You can even break a dowel in a cap and not know it until it is too late. We have added this at no extra charge to the block price. Up grading our product is an on going process. We plan to pour alum. blocks in the fall if there is a demand. We need to have 15 deposits to make it worth our time to do this. We have a list of people that we will start to call on soon that want an aluminum product. You can trust that we will put the same quality in that product as we are doing in the IA II block. We hope to have one soon.
Also, we added threaded freeze plug holes in the IA II at no additional cost. This is a way to bring the outer walls of the block more strength by pushing 360 degrees around each hole. This pressure will add strength to the outer wall. It was not to have a screw in plug to look cool. We copied a Ferd design. I wonder were we got that idea.

Bob, awesome job on those blocks, a real work of art. Now that we have all these great blocks and heads is there any chance of an AllPontiac.com forged crank? We really need on to fill the gap between cast and billet. Thanks

I suspect with your new machining company you will be using that Ferd knowledge a lot. Not
only do they have their experience but they have access to other Ferd people who can provide advice from modeling simulations. Glad you guys are doing your best on this. Tom V.

Mo, Thanks.
Quote Heads? What head is a great head? I know of no head out there for a Pontiac that is a great head. YET We are looking at cranks and heads too. We will make sure that we follow thru and will not lead people on as to how good they are or we will have them next week like others have done.

Bob, I think if your into N/A motors then yes you could use a better head. However, the trend appears to be power adders. As a person in the process of building a turbocharged motor my concern is not head flow but rather keeping the bottom end together. I would buy an Allpontiac.com block in a heartbeat, its a no brainer, however the thought of my $400 cast crank taking out my $2995 block when I'm making 1200HP at a significant RPM is enough to keep anyone awake at night. I think more guys would spend the extra money on your block if they new a good crank was available other than a billet. JMHO

"Heads? What head is a great head? I know of no head out there for a Pontiac that is a great head. YET" What would you call a great head? 375 cfm at 28"? 425 cfm at 28"? A 500 cfm head? A buddy of mine created a 450 cfm pontiac head about 10 years ago from a billet. It had a SB-2 style port spacing configuration but used a very good (at the time) BB Chebby Dart port with a 2.19 intake valve. Two issues with the head were, at that time, the lack of an intake manifold (custom built reqd) and the shaft valvetrain set-up. Today a shaft set-up could be created to work with the Intake/Exhaust pattern and the IA-2 block would be able to handle the required bore size increase. It would probably be an alcohol head though due to being a billet. Let me know if you need more info when you want to build a BIG head. Tom V.

"What would you call a great head? 375 cfm at 28"?
425 cfm at 28"? A 500 cfm head?" Nope. None of that matters. What good are those numbers if the port is too small? A great head would be one with enough VOLUME to feed the bigger inch engines. Forget the number on paper, aim for a head that has enough volume to feed the combination. That is what Bob means. There are none out there, yet. What is availabe is borderline for 512 inches, let alone bigger. A head that offers enough volume for the big inch engines, not just a small block chevrolet port size on big inch engines with big flow numbers on paper. The question is not what needs to be done to make a big head. I have discussed for months with Bob and Frank what needs to be done just like I did with the block before it was made, but they need to figure out how first, and if it will be good to do financially. They have the resources, and they are very intelligent business men. They are just not rushing into it. Joe Pontiac Maximum Race Engines www.maximumraceengines.com [email protected] |

I would say this block is probably as good as it could get right now.Are the roller cam bearings ready to install a option currently?I would bet once Bob and Frank are content with the blocks and some of the investment comes back, the next project will be done the same way Correctly!!Bob told me a while back he would do it right or not at all. Thanks for your efforts and save one for me when the house is done.Brian
