Summit Racing sells Edelbrock Remanufactured Q-Jet Carburetors, although their salesman says they are new. I want to replace my Holley with a Q-Jet. My engine is a 1976 W72 400 with a Torker one intake. The carb I am looking at is model EDL 9974 and costs only 365 dollars. Is this a real Q-Jet? I thought Q-Jets were much more than this. And is summit the place to purchase a Q-Jet? Thanks

Buy a used Qjet core and send it to Cliff Ruggles or one of the other Qjet gurus on the board here. You'll end up with about the same or less money in it and have a carb that actually works.

Yup, I'd have to agree with that... Probably even cheaper to do it that way.

Yes the Edelbrock carbs are QJETS. The one your asking about is one that was rtned for whatever reason & Edelbrock has repaired it.

All the Edelbrock Q-Jets have been discontinued. The Performer RPM is sold out, but there were some reman units available at the time I was in the market. My reman has marks around the bolt holes, it's obviously been installed. (by a moron, I might add) Edelbrock claims to completely inspect each one.
Last I checked (about 6-8 weeks ago) Summit still had "lots" of some of the other new Eddy Q-jets. |

Guys thanks for the replies. I have sent Cliff an e-mail about his services. I understand from this board that Cliff is a expert but how can his carbs be better than a brand new one. And last question about the remans. Are you guys telling me to stay away from them. I need to hear it in plain english that is the only way things sink into my thick head.

The Edelbrock Q-Jets are fine carbs. I had one and was pleased with it. I always had a bog when the secondaries first opened, but overall the carb wasn't too bad. I've since put it away and sent my original Q-Jet to Cliff. Cliff will rebuild and setup the carb to your SPECIFIC application. My carb from Cliff is EXCELLENT. The mileage is better and no more bog when the secondaries first open. Some of the best money I've spent thus far on my car.

Cliff is swamped right now and needs about 3 months to turn round a Q'jet.

Your carb carefully rebuilt by a local tech (or yourself, if you're talented) should be as good as new, as long as the core was salvageable.
An Edelbrock carb "remanufactured" by Edelbrock, should be as good as new. I hope. I bought one... Same deal for a Holley carb rebuilt by Holley. A carb rebuilt by a performance specialist should be better than new. A carb rebuilt on a production line like you'd buy over-the-counter at any local parts houses, is a disaster waiting to befall you. |

The last statement is VERY true. Years ago I exchanged three Q-jets at Shuck's, all of them crap, then I went down to NAPA and ordered a NEW AC Delco Q-jet in the box. I put it on my '73 Old's Cutlass without doing anything to it and the car fired on the first crank and ran PERFECTLY after that. All the "remanufactured" ones had bad throttle shaft bushings and other things. I would VERY much hope that Edelbrock would actually remanufacture thier carbs properly. With a name like Edelbrock THEY BETTER. Uneasyrider

They cant seem to make manifolds that fit without grinding on them first, why would they care any more about the quality of a carb?
Im never enthusiastic about Edel quality control.LOL I purchased and installed an Edelbrock remanufactured 600 afb for a friends sbc street car to replace a very troubled Holley fuel injection system. Out of the box the carb appeared new never installed. The carb was installed, car started instantly, I made some idle adjustments, verified the electric choke setting and operation and the car was once again reliable and stayed that way for a long time. That particular carb seemed very well calibrated for the application so all was well. I cant say how it would have worked on a Pontiac.

Cliff is always swamped. Thats because his work is top knotch. Find a good core and send it to him, or just buy a core from him and WAIT.
You cant rush perfection...

Jegs and Summit sell JET Quad carbs that are incredible value. I gaurantee the best for the money next to the old Carb shop. Bushed throttle plates and many upgrades at the cost of a Pep Boys job. Yes there is a huge fifference in cheap rebuild. The upper stages offer even more tunability which is needed on higher HP motors

I bought a new edelbrock Q-jet years ago when they first came out. It worked absolutely perfectly. I loved it. No problems at all for the 4 years before I sold the car.

Phil:
Does a torker 1 intake have a bolt pattern for a spread bore carb? I thought they had a small plenum and only a pattern for a square bore... Do you have a Qjet now? Cliff has mentioned in the past that he's seen some weird things done to the reman Qjets so be ware if you buy one....better having one calabrated to your exact set up!

I messed around with the Q-jet on my 68 GTO for years. I even had a so called Q-Jet expert look at it. I had bad idle and some real noticeable drivability problems. After screwing around for 15 years, I finally sent it to Cliff Ruggles and he had it for four months and charged me around $200 to heli-coil the inlet and do his thing. The result: a car that I don't even recognize anymore. It idles perfectly and runs well in all driving situations. I don't think that there is any carb in Summit or Jeg's to compete with a Ruggles built Q-Jet regardless of the price.

Just my 2 cents on Cliff's work as well. I just bought a completely rebuilt no numbers (part Buick/Pontiac/Olds) '69 Q-jet off of eBay for about $220. It was like a work of art to look at, every part redied or replated and all new rebuild, but I had a feeling it might not be set up right for my engine. I sent it to Cliff about a month ago and he set it up specifically for my application, top to bottom and sent it back already for about $110 including shipping. So, for $330, I've got a super factory looking carb. with a CliffR tune in less than a month. Can't wait to get it on the car and test it out. I think thats cheaper than any of the Edelbrock units and it looks like a brand new carb. Rick

Thanks all for the kind words.
I haven't obtained any of the Edelbrock "remanufactured" carbs to date...but...the originals weren't all that good so not sure what to expect. The Edelbrock castings are excellent, but quality control was inconsistant. We've seen a few of them fine right out of the box and a high percentage WAY OFF for calibration. To date I've had a couple dozen of the Edelbrock "850" cfm RPM q-jets in here. For some reason they used several different calibrations. I've seen idle tubes from .039" to .043", at least 4 different idle channel, bypass air and idle airbleed sizes, and a wide variation in jets/rods. The jets/rods could have been altered by tuning but it is unlikely anyone modified the other items mentioned. The Edelbrock q-jets are a good starting point for a really nice HP carb, but no better than a 76-up front inlet non ECM factory carb.....Cliff
