Hello all, i am wanting to convert my Bird to a manual. I know alot of you are gonna say put a tremec in it, but that just is not in the budget right now, maybe in a year or so i can go that route. But i figure i can still do everything i need to do to convert it and run a st-10 or muncie for now, then put the tremec in at a latter date. Anyhow i have a chance to buy a M-21, will this hold up to a poncho 400 that is built fairly stout if i dont hammer on it to much? If it wont do does anyone have a st-10 laying around that they want to sell? or another manual tranny that would work?
On a side note if anyone has a good flywheel they want sell let me know. Thanks Pete

I think you'd have to be a little more specific than "a little stout." The M-21 was able to stand up to the torque of a RAIV Judge at the very least. I'm sure it can take more than that.

400 block .30 over, #62 heads ported-flow @.550=246 intake and 226 exh. Torker 2 port matched, 8oocfm avs thunder series carb, cam= duration @ .50 is 246.4 int & 254.9 ext, lift=.54343 int & .54923 ext, Lobe Seperation is 110.1. 4 tube ceramic coated headers. Ford 9 inch, 2 center sections both detroit lockers 3.15 and 3.90 ratios. I am thinking about putting a milder cam in it, but still havent decided on that yet. Sorry about the lack of details.

if you put slicks on the car and really get it to hook, you will be breaking a trans with either a M-21 or a ST-10.A aftermarket BUILT trans may be better.Tom

By the time you build one strong enough to take slicks, you could have bought yourself a Tremec . . .
If you are just running around on street tires, get the Muncie. Keep in mind, though, that the M-21 ratios are ridiculously narrow compared to modern transmissions. I wouldn't bother with it unless you are going to install 3.73 gears or lower in the rearend. The first gear on a Muncie M-21 is a very tall 2.2. You do the math. You might be better of with an M-20, which has a first gear of 2.52. I have one with a 3.55 gear, and it drove very nice with a torquey, mild 455. The ratios STILL seem too close, though, if you are used to modern transmissions. I think the new Tremec TKO 600 has a 2.66 first gear, but a .64 overdrive. That would run very nice with rear gears in the 3.73 to 4.30 range.

If you keep an eye on classified you can sometimes find a Doug Nash for less than $1000.Checking Superstockforums.com I've seen some there also.

Well i guess i will just hold off on this project for awhile. I have done alot of reading in the last few hours on the net, sounds like the 5 speed is the way to go. Might as well do it right the first time. found a site that has the tko500 with everything i will need to install the tranny including driveshaft for $2300.00. I will just have to hide more money from the wife for the next few months so i can get it. Sure would be nice if Santa would leave a TKO under the tree for me
