I am currently rebuilding my #'s Matching 400/350HP Engine, my car has the TH400 trans. All the date codes match on the block, intake, heads, exhaust manifolds and carb so I am leaving the motor stock appearing. Boring .30 over, std rockers, swirl valves. I just converted the 2.93 broken rear to a 3.55 Posi.

Which is the best cam to use for the best performance gain but still "streetable"? Also should I use a stall converter & what RPM with cam you recommend. Thanks!!!

Spend some cash on the valve train. Arp rocker studs, hs full rollar rocker, and get really good push rods. Poncho push rods are really long and flex...Comps Hi Teks, and make sure there the right lenght! I would also have the heads cc'ed first then shaved to bring them to 72cc. This will get the compression up depending on the piston you choose or re-use. And use a good connecting rod/bolts! The cam you choose depends on the compression ratio and the flow of the head and intake choise. Need this info and more info....what exhaust? what tranny? what gear ratio? what do want to do with it? race it? cruise it?

The intake and carb will be stock. The compression is 10.75-1, Is shaving #'s matching heads smart? I need advice on exhaust, now it has 2.5" home-made duals with flowmasters (too loud for me). I want something more original. And yes, this is a cruiser, it was 350HP stock, I would be happy with 400-425 HP.

At 400 to 425 she won't run like a cruiser. 16's are normally 78cc untouched not 72cc.

Id look at the xe268 cam or the 268AH-8 would also be a good choice.

These model numbers, who makes the cam? What about just a duplicate of the HO/RAIV Cam from 68,69,70, would that be a good choice for a quick cruiser?

Do not do ANYTHING to increase the compression.I can not belive that in this day people are still preaching "get the compression up",you need to drop the compresion to 9.5 max.Untouched 16s are 74ccs.Find a competent machine shop to dish a set of TRWs or maybe you can run the TRW with the bevel.Install hardend exaust seats.Aftermarket rods are cheap now,you can find H beams for 350$ and I beams for 200$ just remember to check the big end.If you want to run roller rockers fine but I would not run Harland Sharps.A 2800 ten inch stall will stall at 2800 rpms and run fine on the steet. And no shaving your heads is not smart unless they need it.

68 Verdoro, there were some good cam advice for a similar situation I had with a 400/350HP numbers matching block which I want to get back closer to original. My plan is to go with the Melling SPC-7 which is equivalent to the 068 HO used.

How much money do you want to spend? Get a hydraulic roller and get rid of the stock exhaust manifolds for some Ram Air III repops.

The RAIV cam in a 'cruiser 400' would be a mistake.

Your factory-rated standard 350 HP GTO 400 enginereally didn't make 350 honest horses to begin with. The factory gross HP ratings were a bit optimistic, the output was actually closer to 300-310 HP believe it or not.

400 to 425 HP with stock exhaust manifolds isn't going to happen I'm afraid.

But you can get the engine up to a 'true' 350 HP with a good cam, a re-curved distributor and free-flowing mufflers. Walker Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers (#17749 20" long)are fairly quiet and flow better than noisy Flowmasters.

And drop the compression a bit as dragncar suggests, trying to run over 10:1 compression with iron heads is difficult and ends up ruining many engines.

Get a custom-built Continental converter, I ordered a 10" unit for my current 400 street engine build-up.

Some interesting threads concerning 400 cams and such by Cliff Ruggles.

The 2 cams I listed are from Comp Cams.
