Is it true that the wrong distributor can cause a motor to run hot? I have had cooling problems with my 66, it has a mallory dual point dist. in it. I have a stock one that I have been thinking about trying in it to see what happens, Any advise on this would be great..

All the distributor is route the spark to the proper cylinder at the right time. As long as it does that, it is immaterial which distributor is in the engine.

Now if the distributor is set up wrong (timing, dwell, etc.) any of them (including the correct original one) can cause heating problems.

Just make sure your initial timing is correct, your vacuum advance is cutting in at the right time and amount and your dwell and centrifugal advance are on the money and you should be OK. If you do put the stock one in and it get's better, it just says there is something out of spec with the Mallory.

I put the stock one in and it did seem to run cooler, the Mallory must have something wrong with it because it even seems to run better now..
