it sounds to me like the lr wheel bearing is going bad.
re the axle, that's not a big deal having one made. moser engineering or an equivilant shop can build you one with your old one as a pattern. mike

They also make something called axle saver bearings. They install slightly out toward the hub and ride on a good part of the axle eliminating the leak at the worn axles.
