My fuel pump is bolted to the block with a kind of strange bolts that seem to have 12 sides, but almost look splined. Any idea what they might be?

It's a 12 point bolt . All you need is a 12 point socket to remove the bolt . Look at your socket set . You either have 6 point sockets or 12 pont sockets .

Jim is right use a 12 point socket,but sometimes I get a #12 metric(I think)to fit a little snugger......Alex
