I have a '77 TA with a 400 in it. The heads are 6X with an "8" stamped on them. I was planning on building a "healthy" powerplant {possibly upward of 600 HP). Too much of the car has cancer or has been damaged to restore. My question is, should I go with Edelbrock aluminum heads or use the stockers? I wanted to use the alums. to save weight, but I didn't want to just get rid of the originals. If I do get rid of the stockers, what are they worth? Also it has a 10 bolt posi thay I won't be needing. I'm unsure of the ratio at this time (it's been sitting out in the rain and mud and cant get to the numbers yet). The engine was complete and running when I pulled it. The wiring harness smoked and I got the car for practically nothing. Any and all help is appreciated.

I will also be losing the intake and the whole front subframe, brakes, steering, and whatever else I scrape up. If anyone wants the engine parts, I can have them magnafluxed and send the paperwork with it. There wasn't any fluid mixture of any kind when I disassembled the motor. Thanks.

This is the way I always approach a Project first determine what I want to do with the finished product . 1.Is this a Street car? Do I want to use pump gas? 2.Will this car see The strip? If so How often? How fast do I want to go?Every step closer to a race car the more sacrifices you will have to make towards drivability.These factors should help you make your choice between iron or aluminum heads. If you are going to run a milder cam Hydraulic and stock rods the iron heads will give more performance do to the greater velocity of these heads flow at low lift .However if you build a engine that is either larger in displacement or has the various components(Rods,Studs,valves,springs...)that will enable it to rev. you will be able to take advantage of the additional flow of the e-heads especially at higher lifts.Some advantages of the aluminum heads are 1.the aluminum displaces heat better than iron so you may run a little higher compression . 2.The heads are new so you know what you have. 3.The e- heads are repairable(TIG welding) Advantage of iron heads 1.cost
2.flow at a higher velocity at lower lifts.(work well in milder aplications)3.with a good professional porter these heads can be made to flow 250-300cfm more than enough to get a car into the tens or even better. A lot of Pontiac racers have been winning numerous races with iron heads, the aluminum heads just give us Pontiac people a option we did not have in the past. |
