Well, I got three 1/8 mile passes in today before the spring showers started. Backed boost down to 7 psi and A/F was very rich but did no real tuning. I'm a little disappointed but want to know what you guys think.
The track surface was terrible. Best 60ft with my new ET street radials was 1.90 dropping the clutch at 3000 with lots of wheel spin.
Best pass was 8.12 @ 90 mph. I blame some of this on a corrected altitude density of 6931 ft.
This is compared this to my best pass last year of 8.29 @ 86 with a 1.87 60ft and corrected air 5700 ft.
I've got a wideband on the way and hopefully can tune this thing in for some much better time slips.

JBP might be able to give you some tuning tips on your Twin Turbo setup --that T/A should really fly .

Don't be too hard on yourself for the first time to the strip with a new combo; it'll take a few trips to dial everything in.

For where you are I think you did just fine.

I see 7's in your future

Maybe Butler can and maybe they can't. The animal they tuned and raced is a whole different ball of wax from what he's running.

Let's see, a fat combo with no real tuning, *****ty track prep, and 7,000' density altitude? I think you're being too hard on yourself. You'll get better performance out of it with some tuning, better air, and better track prep...I'm certain of it.

Chicken what kinda 1/4 mile times did you have before??..I dont even look at my 1/8 mile times usually, till now..I had a best 1/8 mile of 8.08@85mph right now with a 12.70 1/4 mile time and a 1.75 60'
The turbo setups seem to really do all of their work after the 1/8 mile, so you may not be seeing all the potential till later on ?
Not bad times tho.
You will get it dialed in soon enough.. Your poor 60' shows either bad track prep or your putting more power down than you can hook right now.

I've never run the car in the 1/4. I agree the a 1/4 mile run might be a different story as I'm right at the top of third near the end of the 1/8. I usually short shift into fourth since my times don't seem to change much by wringing it out to go through the lights in third.
I think the car may be geared about right for the 1/4 (3.73 28" tire) but I'm considering swapping back to the original 3.23 gear set to keep the engine in it's torque curve through the traps and just using the first three gears. This may also help load up the turbos and make use of the big torque from the engine.
Another note I forgot in the original post was that a couple of fellow racers watching my runs made a point of coming over to tell me they were smelling clutch smoke when I shifted into second gear. Perhaps when the car was rolling enough for the tires to hook the clutch couldn't hold the torque. I'm not sure if the gaer change to 3.23 will make it better or worse.

The clutch slip WILL get worse over time, regardless of what gear is out back.

Hey Firechicken,
I do think I know what 2 BIG problems are with your car. I remember you posting pictures of the engine compartment layout and I recall that you installed those JUNKY and VERY restricted foam air filters. If you still have them on, remove them and make a pass. I guarantee you will see a big difference. This will also explain the over rich condition. Ken

Agreed on the air filters. They are crap. Our track is very dusty, however, so I need a small filter of some type. Any suggestions?

Chicken, whats your engine combo look like..cam heads etc.
I was hoping to see alot more out of your turbos, unless your engine combo is less agressive than mine I would think you should see some faster 1/8 mile times, unless you have sever clutch slippage. I thought our engine combos were close to the same.
For the air cleaner deal, go get a few of those carb spacer rings from auto zone, then get you a few of the small air boxes from the corolla or camry's or some other import and cap off the inlet and outlets then cut a large hole in the bottom and affix the rings to the box, and cut out the entire center of the lid so that there is just the outer rim holding the filter in and install some K&N filters and Voila home made air boxes.

Cam specs are 224/236 @ .050 .510 lift 114 LS
I ended up shelving my ported heads in favor of a stock set of 6X-8s to drop compression to 8.2
1.77 EX valves added and bowl cleanup but no porting.
Stock rods and cast pistons
That mild enough for ya

Not trying to build a grenade. Trying to prove my theory that it's rpm and/or poor tuning that hurts bootom end parts. With my small cam, 5500 redline and normal inertial loads I'm confident that the bottom end will take the extra power load from the boost as long as it doesn't go lean or detonate.

I sent you a reply to your email. I'll resend later if you didn't get it.

If I Figured this right on wallace racing they have a altitude calculator ,but it only goes to 5500 ft....,but using your numbers corrected times would be 7.56@96!!I believe that would be at sea level...and thats not even your 6900 ft!!! So I think thats great actually...considering those factors,.....

I wouldn't get too upset yet. It took me almost a year of tuning to get into the 11's and the car was initially slower with the turbo that when I ran it normally aspirated. Hell, one night at the track I was running high 13's and low 14's! LOL! Imagine that, a turbocharged 455 running those times. After I got everything right though, the times immediately went into the 11's. Sounds like a cool project.

If what grand says is true, those times calculate into an 11.40-11.50 1/4 mile time at around 115

Nice numbers the altitude is a real killer ...
What would a 7.28 in the 1/8 @97 be altitude was probably about 800-1000 above sea level but might have been low so figure it was prety much sea level ?

I broke my rear and I've swore off Slicks so it may never run that quick again.... So I am curious. Sorry to get off topic... Id love to build a turbo engine someday so keep us up to date on the progress. It sounds like a nice combo and your just gettign started with it !!

http://www.nhra.com/stats/indexes_stk.html

The NHRA has some index charts with 1/4 and 1/8 indexes. They are fairly accurate.

like I said above...mif to high 11's ...not bad for sure with stock rods and cast pistons
Stay on top of that tune up.
