Hi everyone, is it okay to switch from synthetic (Mobil 1) oil to non-synthetic? I have a stock '66 389 that was rebuilt about 7k miles ago by the previous owner. I've read that synthetics tend to be "leakier" all things being equal. Also, the cost of the stuff is pretty high. Any thoughts on the pros and cons? Or any reason not to get back to a good basic oil? Thanks

I run mobil 1 in all of mine. If it started with mobil 1 I would stay with it. But ther is nothing wrong with going to regular oil. Mobil 1 from my experiance only leaks more if you start the motor out on regular oil and then switch over to mobil 1. You tend to get better milage with sinthetic.

I would like to add that the bearings will last a LOT longer with synthetic!

I would like to add that the bearings will last a LOT longer with synthetic!

If your engine's oil was changed regularly then you shouldn't have any problem. Where synthetic oils really tend to leak is with engines that have varnish buildup because they clean the varnish away. With only 7K miles I wouldn't be worried about it plus you can extend your oil change intervals.
Synthetics will sweat out cork gaskets but nothing really major. Just enough to look nasty when dust clings to it. I just use Simply Green and clean the engine monthly. Be careful with other cleaners because they might fade your engine paint. Bartman Ponies run but Birds fly

In 1966,
Check the oil that's used in all the new cars and trucks(syn.) Yes, it's worth 1 1/2 mpg in my Truck...Over 100,000 miles and you can eat off the top on the engine...I would use nothing but Syn.oil... My race car has seen nothing but, motor is like new..Yes, it's worth some HP..Good Luck on your project... Dave..1033
