I am thinking of doing this. I am just trying to make sure of what all I will need. I will go with a 700R4. I know I will need a adapter plate to bolt to engine and a crossmember. but what else will I need. I am putting this in a 68 firebird with a TH400 currently. thanks.

I did this swap and am very pleased with the results. I also wrote an article on the installation that was recently published in the GTOAA magazine. I can't attach it to this message as MSWord documents aren't compatible with this system. Send me your email address and I'll send you the article.
FYI, the swap isn't too difficult, but if you leave anything out the durability of the trans will suffer. There are a few critical items to address, but nothing that is hard to accomplish. |

I prefer to leave the "lock up" out or a non-lock up style. Properly built they are as good a mid level performance trans as anything else.
You get in the 9s and lower, I don't know??? Stick w/ the TH400.

To the seven members that asked for a copy of my article, it will be on it's way shortly. Sorry for the delay, but I'm currently travelling.
To Larry Davis, Anything going 9's needs all the help that it can get and a TH400 is pretty much bulletproof. The company that I used, Phoenix Transmission Service, offers several different build ups for the 700 that will work with various levels of performance, but 9's? I'd recommend the lock up be used with a street car to ease the stress on the clutches. |

That article would be very interesting, may I have a copy please? I've been thinking of installing a pontiac 400 in my 1975 chevy k20 pickup, but with a 4.09 gear ratio my crusing rpm's are higher than i'd like to see them. A 700r4 will cure the problem (along with a different transfer case, drive shafts, etc). I already have an adapter plate I made.
