the oil pan has to come off to install the lower tube. This requires removing the engine.

Yup, that does suck. Ranks right up there with forgetting to put in the oil pump drive shaft...although that can be done from topside with some modifications.

Ok. Lets see how much grief I get over this post.

Leave the lower tube out. Cut an old Dipstick short so it will not protrude into the pan and hit the crank. Store the correct dipstick in the trunk, and only use it to check the oil level.

How to determine the oil level. On the initial fill add the correct amount of oil (5 or 6 qts), and make sure the filter is full. Use the correct length dipstick and mark it where the oil level is.

Been there, done that. Last time I let a builder assembly one of my engines.

That may work, but doesn't the lower tube direct the stick into the pan sump? Without the lower tube, you don't really know where the stick ends up in the crankcase??

You can chachi it in or do it correctly, its up to you... If it was a Ford motor, I might consider the suggestion above..

The dipstick (if you can get it in) should only go so far and always go that far. If its a first time fill, you could mark it and be relatively sure that that is the full line. Heck, even if you know its a 5 qt pan then your still good. All your using it for is to test whether the motor is burning oil etc. I like that suggestion as I know tearing out a motor is WAY TOO MUCH FUN!

No grief from me! I would do exactly as you say- and wait to find out what else I screwed up to REALLY need to pull the engine.

Been there too. I made a round dipstick handle and put a bend in the dipstick so it will always go into the pan and not hit the crank etc. I engraved an arrow on the dipstick that points toward the engine head to index it each time. Then I made up a short dummy stick to put in the tube as a plug. I store the checking stick under the hood on top of my radiator brackets.

Did you put the extension from the tube to the tray.
