Might take an ATI Procharger, but stay tuned for next year and a low 8 second Pontiac on 93 octane Pump gas.

ANYTHING was legal, as long as it passed tech, made the commute, and ran on pump gas. Many cars were loaded to the gills with nitrous. There was a turbo car there. I don't remember if there was any supercharged cars.
The winner had a 565ci rat with a ton 'o nitrous. |

Ray, they allowed power adders. There were specifically turbos and nitrous.

To answer some of your questions, anything was legal as long as it made the cruise, and did pass tech for the times you were running. There were a few turbo cars there, mainly guys running nitrous. The problem was the weather. 85* at night with 100% humidity, and NO BREEZE! The track worked very well. But due to the weather, everyone was off their claimed time. My friend Rob won the event with the 67 Chevelle, and that car ran 9 teens the weekend before in better air. Some had traction issues, but most of the cars worked good. None of the cars went into the 8's, although a few could have. The deal was to be the fastest, yet most consistent car there. The drive was hell in that rush hour traffic. Since it was the first event it was kind of unorganized a little. We ran on Friday night, due to rain on Saturday. Sunday would have been ideal, as it was 70* with no humidity. We went back on Sunday to test, but they close the track down for the weekend even if it rained on Saturday.

if someone has the rules, please email them to me, and how to go about entering for next year,
my old combo was 3450 lbs,it had flat tops steel rods with a stock block and cast crank. this was a 12.5 to 1 motor that I never tried to run on pump gas, but I think it would. espesially with a programable digital 7 box the best then was 8.90 at 161 mph which was limited by lifting the heads is there any chassis limits? tire size?

Ray-
The only rules were that the car had to drive the rush hour traffic, without going in front of or falling behind either of the lead/chase vehicles. The cars must pass tech for the class they are running, for eg: cars in the 9's must pass NHRA teh for cars in the 9's ,etc... You must run 93 octane Rocket brand fuel, which I will say is tons more forgiving than the weasle piss 93 octane from the pump. It is a race gas blend at 93 octane without all the additives you would get on the street. Guys were running 12.1-13.1 compression on nitrous. I am not saying it is an all out race gas but it will definitely work tons better than the pump stuff. You get 15 gallons of this and must make the cruise and 3 passes, single file, you are not running an opponent. The 3 combined fastest passes will win. The cars get tech'd at Comp Cams facility, they drain your gas and use theres, you bring it back to the parking lot, and the car gets blocked off, unable to be touched from there on with the exception of checking bottle pressure in the trunk if need be. Even then you must have a Comp official there to see what you are doing. Tire pressure can also be checked, but nothing under the hood can be done. It would be smart to get there the thurseday before the event for test and tune as they run till 11pm and you can see what the weather will be like, but I will say the track works very nice. There are no engine specifications you must follow. Run what ya brung! And run it on 93 octane. The cruise is a bit brutal so hopefully you have no overheating problems. You get some time between rounds to allow for cool down. Other than that there are no further rules. Anything else just let me know. when is the next one? next year?
my current motor is 13 to 1 but the old motor is 12 to 1, do you have any specs on the fuel, like the gravity and such so i could do some math. and where would I get some for testing? I assume i could not change bottles, so i would have to mount three bottles and turn them on one at a time for each pass? I cant believe theres no rule on weight , or tire size! Im sure if I tried I could get 3-4 hundred out of the car and be at 3100 lbs and put the w tire back on. just not sure how big of a shot I could give it with that fuel Hey Dude what do you think how big of a shot did you old school guys give them before all the fancy race gas came around? think that gas would handle a 32 jet?

keeping it cool is prety easy on my car, but a good back up would be a 4th nitrous bottle, that purged through a tube in the radiator, the nitrous would act as an inter cooler of sorts that you could do an occasional purge during the cruse

I believe the next one will be next year. I don't have the gravity or weight of the gas, but it is Rocket Brand 93. They didn't tell us what gas it was till it was too late to get some and test with. I did check the egt in the exhaust, and it dropped about 150 degrees. So that tells me it is like running a race type gas. Don't just go by octane because it is a totally different gas. As for the compression, The higher it is the less timing you should need, especially with nitrous. Since the gas is not a regualr street pump gas, you should be ok, especially with the digital 7. There is no limit to tire or weight or cubic inch or nitrous. That gas could have handled atleast a 250 hit, especially with the weather we were haveing, the car was dead rich. No you were not able to change bottles, so the more you have the better you will be especially with a big hit. As for 32 jets, Just put a rich tune up in it. You can make adjustments up till the point that the car gets tech'd in. There were a few guys running 13.1 with nitrous. Some were running 2 stages of 300 or better. As for keeping it cool, whatever works..anything goes. Hope this helps.

The #7 finisher was a Dodge and the article said that guys from his message board pitched in to pay for his gas and lodging just to be sure they were represented. I'd be willing to put $10.00 in the mail for a couple of guys that had cars that represent us next year. If everyone that loves Pontiacs pitched in a few bucks when that time gets nearer maybe we wouldn't have to grumble about the Chevy dominance. I'd love to see a Ponti in the top ten.

Also keep in mind that this was not an event that you just showed up for and entered. HR hand-picked all these cars out of thousands of entries. Going back and looking at the cars they chose and the cars they dropped, it seemed like the cars that were chosen were cars that APPEARED the most streetable. If your car looks like a full-on race car, i.e. no interior, no accessories, etc., you probably have less chance of getting chosen.

Fantom is correct, but I do feel ray has a shot, from what I have seen the car looks like it will be accepted. Mainly due to being a Pontiac AND running the number. If he can get into the high 8's consistently, even in humid weather, it shouldn't be a problem.
Just wanted to let you guys know, the new Hot Rod is out with some nice pics of the guys. As some of you know, my friend Rob won the event, and on his first page, he can be seen shaking hands with myself and a friend of mine. The one he is shaking hands with in the picture is my friend Dan, I am next to him in the black shirt and hat. A few of the guys from long Island were in the picture as well, including Jay from All Wired, who is a current member on my board, congrats to him. I am also in the next page in the pic of the winner doing his burnout. Jay from All Wired Installations placed 20 out of 50, and I can be seen with him in the picture of the car on the cruise in the 85 Monte Carlo SS (#20).Look for some pictures from the event comming soon on my site. Thanks to Matt King for the plug in that article for #20 as well . I had another car that would have been picked(69 Camaro), both cars can be seen on my website in customer's rides, but he had no rollbar, but was featured in Hot Rod in the "77 cars that would have made it but..." issue . Look back at the site as I will have some updated pictures, and an events page as well. Things are starting to get hairy with work, and moving into a bigger shop, so I'll check back as often as possible. Joe Pontiac Maximum Race Engines www.maximumraceengines.com [email protected] |
