I have a '71 Formula 400 clone. When I bought the car 20 years ago it had '73 heads with altenater/power steering bracket alignment hole bossed into the driver side head. I have swapped the heads for '68 #62 big valve heads(211-177). Problem is, there is no bolt hole for the brackets to bolt to. The 73 system used the big WASHER/SPACER as well. Is there a manufacture for the original style bracket for the 68 heads. I did a major restoration on the car 2 years ago, and am trying to tie up the little things now. I haven't been able to decifer the Year One catalog for this item, and figured I would give you all a chance before I called their tech line. (Subject change)I have also heard that a Caddy rear end will be a direct bolt in for the 2nd gen. F-body and comes with 340 posi and disc brakes. I just can't remember if it was a 75-76, or a 76-77.
Thank you.

It sounds like you'll need the 1970 Firebird setup. I know a few of the alternator brackets are being reproduced but I don't think every piece is. You may have to make a junkyard run.

I live in small town Montana, and the only 70 that has been in any junkyards here had a chevy motor and that was 2 1/2 years ago. That is the direction I have been leaning though. Thank you.

NO, NO, NO, I would NEVER degrade my 'bird by putting a piece of chevy engine in it. I meant I was leaning towards hitting the junkyards. Sorry for the misunderstanding. The 400 in it now is just fine.

Dude... Sounds like trouble! What about drilling and tapping a hole into the head? I know that the brackets are way different for 68, and you might end up having to change your timing cover/water pump in order to facilitate 68 brackets due to the difference in water pump snout lengths. I'm assuming that the 70 brackets were drilled to fit a 68 head but accomodated the longer pump snout for the pulley alignment.

Good luck!

Dennis, what do the '71 brackets look like? Pictured below is a '70 TA alternator bracket setup. 1970 Firebird Trans Am used water pump pulley 480511 XW, crankshaft pulley 480507 XK and power steering pulley 480513 YM. A/C cars used water pump pulley 3939002 AH (I really can't make it out, might be something close), crankshaft pulley 480508 XR, A/C pulley 480509 XS and power steering pulley 480513 YM.

Solution: Early big valve heads on later engine with '71+ brackets & pulleys...

No reason to have to convert to all '70 1/2 bird brackets & pulleys, just have run a slightly shorter long alt bolt, then back the bolt up with a nut. It works.

Also no Cadillac rears are a direct bolt in. Only leaf spring Caddy rear is the '76-79 Seville piece & it is different perch width, different bolt pattern, & has the round flat mating flange. Also this Seville piece never had better than 3.08 gears.

Pete's Ponies,
I am interested in your engine brackets.
Do you have the airconditioning brackets
and components available from the 70 birds
you are parting out?

Thanks
