Firewall is 60% Gloss Black I believe. The top of the firewall/cowl is also black. The sides of the Firewall that are beneath the fenders are body color.
Here is a pic of my 69 kinda roughly done to see what it would look like.

The firewall is an area a lot of restorers do incorrectly. The firewall was painted at the same time as the underbody of the car, and it is painted in an approx. 30% gloss black. It will be a different shade of black than the inner fenders and radiator cradle, etc; as they are 60% gloss. Also the heater box is 60% gloss. This will show a contrast; but that is the way it was, as these items were painted by independant contractors, and shipped in and then assembled on the car. Thus, different shades of black. Some guys like to have everything the same shade of black, and that is up to them if that is what they want. But if you want factory correct, go with the contrasting shades of black.

I knew it was something like that...I had my post right, but then of course I changed my mind. Now that I've had time to think about it, he is correct. I painted the firewall with 30% and will be doing the A/C box 60%. Sorry for any confusion, my brain take a bit to work sometimes.

Thanks guys, I thought that the firewall area was black. This should resolve the pissing contest with my body-man. I blasted her last week and was thinking of doing the whole thing in zero-rust.
How does one arrive at a certain % of gloss. I've been tossing this around for some time, and the point I'am at now......I'm thinking of going with the correct gloss coat for the susp./frame/etcc.............

I had my paint mixed by Painter's Supply, I have a friend that works there and he hooks me up with the right stuff.

Im pretty sure the AC box is supposed to be natural fiberglass finish with clear coat on it, which is a dark brown color.

Not sure if you knew that or not, maybe you are just painting it as a personal preference but it sounded like you were trying to make everything look as it was from the factory so I thought I would mention it. Unless you dont have AC and meant heater box then proceed sir

Thanks guys, my buddy runs a body shop and is "suffering through this thing" with me!!! LOL!!! I dont have too worry about the proper color of the a/c box (and yes no air in SC really sucks, just gonna have to go FAST!!).

428 is correct about the air box. It does not get painted. A non air car gets the heater box painted 60% gloss. Sorry for not making myself clear.

Sorry guys, I was talking about the Heater Box and not the A/c box. Seems we are all on the same wavelength.
