Can your cam shaft be in essence wiped out and the car still run ok or does it just start running like crap if the cam gets wiped??
Cuz i remember when i got this new motor put in i primed the oil pump and all that good jaz and fired it up and let it run for an hour or so ,,,killed it let it cool off changed oil and filter and went and drove it...While on test ride i was cruzing about 40 mph and the car all of the sudden sped up and had more power without me applying more gas, and the exhaust tone changed from this blub blub sound to like a crisp exhaust note, then all of a sudden it was gone just as fast as it came and the car slowed back down and had the old exhaust tone...Weird huh, and i have never been able to get it to do that again.
any ideas??????

My old 455 blew a head gasket and on tear down noticed a single lobe going flat. Ran its best time ever when the gasket blew.

The 3 times I have had cars with wiped cam lobes over the years, all 3 times the car would idle fine, but pop back out the carb and stall when you touch the pedal.

Well she dont pop or back fire through the carb or nothing like that, it just seems like the engine is Stopped up in a sense dont really know how to explain it really even with open headers it doesnt sound like you would think it should seems kinda flat ..this probably sounds kind of odd to you guys lol. Is there enough room to pull the cam withought pulling the engine in a 77 TA??? i really dont wana pull this thing AGAIN hehe.

Yes there is enough room. You'll need to take out the radiator and unbolt the center support and move it to the side, but it will come out. Doesnt sound like a cam problem though. More like an ignition or maybe carb problem. Before pulling the cam, take the valve covers off and rotate the engine and watch all of the rockers to see if one of them doesnt have its full range of motion. I think your problem is elsewhere though. What is the rest of your combo?

I had 2 lobes wiped in my van with a SBC; I noticed a different exhaust note and a reduction in power. The acid test would be as above, remove the covers & check the valve movement.

Regards, George

Cam changes in car, not fun but do-able. First besides all the front timing cover etc you will need to loosen the brace for the hood mechanism and slide it to one side. Loosen A/C coil and move it some.

28 degrees total timing will make a Pontiac engine sound flat (unless of course there's a 6-71 sitting on top of it and you're at WOT). Check the simple things first before pulling the cam.

Another way to check for a wiped cam is to check the cylinder pressure with a gauge. I had one wipe on me one time and the cylinder pressure check found it, what was interesting is that sometimes it wouldn't register any pressure at all on the compression stroke.

I have removed the valve covers adn adjusted the valves several times, 2 times because the old regged nuts wore out and the last time to put on some poly locks, each time i watched each rocker go up and down all the way or so it seems to me, so if that is the main indication of cam wipeout then guess i dont got a bad cam. Done compression check ,,,got like 160-165 Lbs at each cyl. that is bout right correct right;???
Lemans1 see my post Called Need Sugestions for engine build

Everything sounds ok thus far. Cylinder pressure readings depend on different variable (static compression ratio and cam timing). What you have is good, and so long as they are close from cylinder to cylinder, you're fine. Best way to check is with the engine warm and the carb at WOT.
