I get a little bit of belt squeal when I rev , I have tightened belts also cleaned pulleys with scotch brite.
The only other reason I can see is there is not a clutch on the cooling fan, should I have one or not?

One of your pulleys might not be lineing up totally straight with the other one. My 2dr did the same with the power steering pump and belt. If the belt is going into the pulley off-centered the sides of the belt are rubbing too much which will make them squeal.

Give me a thumbs up, tell me "Nice Car!", but for god's sake, don't call it an Impala.

What type of belts are you using? Are they "V" shaped, or are they the "ribbed" style? I had problems with mine because I had the ribbed style and it would howl under throttle, but quiet at idle, so I replaced them with the "v" style that it should have had in the first place and all is happy now.

My other life has meaning....

I have also found that using a belt that is to narrow will cause the squealing when reving the motor.
It's sorta of sad that all manufactures do not make thier belts the same for an application.
Have found that the Gates belts work the best for me.

I fought this problem for years. All of our suppliers kept sending me the wrong size belts. On many dual groove pulleys, the width of the front groove is different than the width of the rear groove. If those 2 belts both run on the same 2 pulleys (typically the crank pulley and the water pump pulley), and are not the correct width, they will squeal. Reason being: due to the circumference of the grooves, the belts are traveling at different "speeds" yet the pulleys are only turning at one speed. One of the belts is always dragging, "squealing." With the engine off, stand over top of the water pump pulley. Look straight down the side of the pulley where both belts travel to the crank pulley. The outsides of the 2 belts MUST be riding at the same height. If one belt "rides higher" than the other-you have found your problem. If this is your problem, when you get the correct size belts-they will run silent.

On a side note, ever since I bought my alternator last year, it has always squealed when I revved the car. After getting March pullies and new belts and ajusting them over and over, it still does not go away. It is possible that the alternator itself is doing this? It is the only thing I can think of, but I don't know if alternators did this, I have never seen it happen. Maybe try new belts, again?! It is getting to be VERY annoying....Haven't done much with it because the car was down all summer. When I had the motor rebuilt and put everything back on, it still squealed. Does anyone have any ideas? It annoys me a lot, and I think I might try another alternator, the one I have is a rebuild. It squealed when I put it in, I thought it would go away b/c I had new belts, and it didn't. I have adjusted it so many times it has made no difference....Thx.

Edit: I think I have the ribbed belts, have to check when I get back home, but this has never been a problem before. It only occurred once the alternator was changed. Maybe the march pullies are better off with V belts anyways, maybe I should check into them.

You might want to try and isolate which belt is squealing by taking one belt off at a time and seeing if it still squeals. I am still struggling with my belt squeal problem as well. I had to use sandpaper to roughen up the pullies and this seemed to help quite a bit. Mine still squeals but not until I get to about 5000 rpm.

also make sure your PS pump bolts are all good and tight first, then do the alternator. Could be when pulling the alternator back your putting pressure on the ps pump and its moving a bit, loosening the ps belt. Make sure nobody left out some tensioning bolts for the ps pump, theres usually a couple of them to hold it in place. actually, I may be thinking of my Olds 455 motor in my cutlass, dont think pontiacs have 2 groove ps pulleys my bad! I know it's a normal response to try and tighten the belt when we here squealing, but belts can squeal when there to tight as well. I fought that problem for a while with my alternator belt, then my buddy Bill said, "try loosening it" and sure enough it worked. Sometimes the simplest thing is the answer.

BELT FIX

Guys,

I have been having the same problem with my 455 until I switched out the main pulley yesterday. The old one had a little groove worn in it. This fixed the problem that I have been fighting for months. Hope this helps?
