DUMB QUESTION.....maybe....
Can I start my motor while it's on the engine stand? Would like to "hear" it run before putting it in the car.  YES....NO....maybe??? Thanks Chris

what kind of "engine stand" are you talking about? The type that bolts to the back of the block that you use to build the motor? Then no.

make a stand out of 2X4's or 4X4's that the engine can be safely seated in without tipping and clears enough room for the flywheel to spin...hookup headers and radiator...engine stand that is for standing only is super unsafe...i just tested my motor in the engine compartment without trans hooked up...

The engine stand is a very heavy duty engine stand with two front very wide leggs Its actaully very sturdy, but I can see where it may be unsafe. Just thought it would be nice to finally hear it run.....soon, rather than in the car.
I have a brake system to get installed, and the front end to work on.... Just getting antsy!!!

Well my first motor I rebuilt when I was 15 I started sitting on the garage floor and just held onto the water neck and rear of the intake. DO NOT TRY THIS! I would not try to start on a engine stand, a cradle yes. The steel tublar cradle that sits on the floor can be used.
I know when your young you try dumb things and get away with them.

Don't even think about trying to start the engine on an engine stand. The stand is made for assembly only, it's much too unstable to try to run an engine on it.
I have started up old used engines on the floor of my garage to do a quick test. But you should install it in your car if you want to run it. That way you'll have a cooling system (important) and exhaust system with mufflers so you can hear any funny noises that may mean trouble. Don't mess up your nice engine, put it in the car to run it.

I ran my 400 last weekend on a stand to break it in. It is on a "Goodwrench" stand, pretty sturdy but nothing real serious. I made a radiator stand out of 2x4's. I used a switch for coil power, and a switch for crank power, and a jumper cable to the starter. I also used an oil and temp guage. Don't be fooled, a lot can go wrong, I have heard of problems with the engine causing vibration. I was pretty confident in the build as I did it myself, but used caution. keep a fire bottle ready, and route the wires carefully. I saved a lot of trouble by running it on the stand. I had to run minus the inner valvesprings per the cam break-in directions, and it was a snap to do on the stand. I also was worried about destroying the ceramic coating on the new headers with the 2000rpm for 30 minutes cam break-in. I used the old manifolds and a partial pipe for the first 30 minutes, then switched to the headers just to hear it idle. Do not rev it whatever you do.
