I'd use heads that flow around 240-250cfm intake @.500" lift on a 400/428/455 with forged rods and lightweight pistons and anti-pump up lifters with the recommended springs.
Coverter/trans and rear will depend on the size of the engine you choose, if a 400 I'd go for 3400rpm converter with 3.90's, if 455 a 3000rpm converter with 3.55's and if 428 somewhere in between (3200rpm with 3.73's?). You will most likely be going over 6000rpm in any of those engines, so make sure the oiling system and bottom end are in good shape. |

F.B.C.
You will never be happy with that cam in any car that can be driven on the street! It is designed for continous higher RPM loads. In fact, my old Wolverine catalog has one almost identical - even same very wide lobe separation of 116, and it is listed for "Short Oval" applications. And the Wolverine had the same 111 intake center and same 121 exhaust center lines. The intake was 244 rather then your 246, but the exhaust was the same 254 duration @ .050. And the lift on both lobes were .518 as compared to your .512/.530. In other words, the two cams are practically identical and would act/work the same. Note that Crane rates it for 3500 to 7000 - that means it would be very weak down in any normal driving range! Cams of that duration from Crower, Lunati, Comp Cams have lobe separation of 108 to 110, and with intake lobe centers much earlier (106-108) - that would pull the power range back down to a reasonable RPM, although they would idle even worse. I tried the Wolverine version, PN WG 5060, in my wagon - compared to my 041 cam, it lost about .2 seconds and 2 MPH in the 1/4! Normally, I recommend that anyone run/try any parts they have on hand, but you will waste a lot of time and money on that one! And when much better cams can be bought for around 140-150, why waste time and money trying to make it work? I suggest you replace the Torker with an RPM, and prepare for and use 1.65 rockers, and you may be pleasantly surprised at how quick your present car really is! I have run 11.70 at 4065#, 3.31 gear, Pontiac iron Q Jet intake, Q Jet, 041 cam/1.65 rockers, full exhaust system, and pump gas with 10 CR. At your race weight, some tuning and minor parts changes can pick up a bunch of performance. Jim Hand |

Build a car around a cam? That was supposed to be a joke, right?
How about building a car around the E.T. window you're looking to hit? Mr. Hand: nice to hear from you again. How's your old pal Gatch? wink! wink! |

The lift on that crane cam in your pic would be .562 on the intake and .582 on the exhaust. According to the Dudes sight the lift on the 041 cam would be .518 http://www.angelfire.com/fl4/pontiac...yCamSpecs.html.
