transmission crossmember
Hello
What did everyone use for a race car crossmember? I don't have a stock one so should I just build one or buy one. Should I use the rubber shock mounts on the frame or not? Thanks |

I have one out of a Chevelle which is a little lighter than stock BOP a-body, with no rubber on the ends. I also thought about a chrome moly one, Lemons headers lists one for Chevelle that should work on all 64-72 A's except conv.

trans mount
Sound like I should be looking for a Chevelle mount it would put some chevy parts to good use. That one from Lemons is a little pricey

Robert, that site says it will NOT fit a GTO, or any other rubber mounted type x-member car?

I have 72 GTO, I have stock crossmember,I didnt use rubber.I made 4
aluminum shims, 2 per side, I think qtr in thick.

My problem with the stock crossmember is that I cannot extend my 3 1/2" collectors beyond it...I'd like to run mufflers, but can't. I may have to try the shim thing. If I shim it up a bit, I may gain a bit of clearance. I also have a poly trans mount, which may be a touch taller than a stock mount. I'm going to pull it out to see if I can shave it, or check it VS a stock mount. I really want to run the race bullets I have...Open headers are OK, but I feel I may have a beter chance of hearing a problem with the mufflers.

Jag w/ your et , solid c.m. couldnt hurt.Pitch rubber,measure shims needed
w/ c. m. cntrd between bracket and top of frame,add a little to thickness for good pinch,your done.I used steel motor mt. I have header ground clr problem.Takes 4 guys to get it off trailor lol.

The one in that we built in the picture is for a 70 GTO so it should be the same as a 72
It was designed to work with a full 3 inch exhaust. Saved over 11 lbs |

I have one from a 70 Chevelle in my 71 GTO and no issues on exhaust clearance, alot stiffer than the stock unit.

welded a custom fit "tongue" to crossmember and discarded the rubber bushing and "clamp" bolted it right to the frame. had to cut a notch in the front side of the crossmember to clear the header collectors.
