I flew out to to washington state to get a 72 nova with a 327 SBC in it. Drove it back to Michigan in 2 days. Around Chicago.. noticed it wouldn't idle at lights without gas. Vacuum gauge was going nuts. I drove it 400 miles home after that. RPMs under 3500. Then it sat for 10 months until I got back on leave. I took it out a few times, spinning it to 6000 RPM a few times.. then tore it down. The #8 intake lifter crapped out. Bent the pushrod, shattered the spring. I drove it 500 miles like this, on 7 cylinders. And rodded the **** out of it to show it off to my brothers.

BTW, the lifter stayed in the bore.

Cool

I drove a Type II (watercooled) VW bus with a Type I (air cooled) motor from NH to Atlanta GA & back - fuel injected that had to be push started. We never turned it off for gas, and we camped on sloped sites.

On the way down, the owner told me it was using some oil. I looked at the back gate when we stopped for gas, & it was covered in oil. I bought a couple of cans of 20W diesel tractor oil & filled her up. Nary a drop came out the rest of the trip.

That was probably a 2500 mile trip. A few months later it incinerated at a toll plaza in MA.

I went to the beach in a VW camper in '77, and had my entire vinyl album collection in the back, imports, cutouts, out of prints, one-off stuff. It caught fire, on I95, left a puddle of platic on the pavement which was there for years. I'd drive by that spot and almost still gets me foggy...
