Default HUD Windshield

My HUD windshield is cracked top to bottom but in the center.
To replace it does it HAVE to be a HUD specific w/s or will a regular ole replacement one still let the HUD work?
I have heard "it don't matter "from one glass place and "it matters" from others. I'd love to save that extra $50 if possible. Please advise!

My understanding is there is a film on the inside to aid the HUD. That's what the dealership told me after they broke mine and had to replace it. Man, that is a handy feature. Miss it

Im with Up on this one; my downstairs neighbor installs autoglass and said the same thing when we had the GTP.

I put HUD in a car that didn't originally come with it... The display was slightly dimmer but still very readable.

When they replaced one on my 98 GTP I asked if it was a special window because of the HUD and they said no. I couldn't tell the difference after it was replaced with a standard window..

Cool Damn!!!

I bought an extra McLaren GP for parts because the glass man told me that those windshields were @ $800 and hard to find! I could see a very discernable area in the glass where the HUD would display. What is it they say? "Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear." Fortunately, I sold both cars, never needing to part the old one, which ran better than the "one owner" I had. Neat cars with lots of features. Good luck. Ron

Replaced the windshield yesterday with a standard one. So far so good, mabey just a hint of fuzziness around the edges of the mph's. Haven't had enuff time behind the wheel yet in different driving conditions to get a real feel yet. So far so good though. Thanks for the replies guys.
