OK guys help me figure out a value to sell my 81 my high school daughter's been driving.
81 originally 301Turbo(sitting on stand it needs to go with it, supposed to have tweaked with a UD cam , has head studs.) Black T top was and SE no stripes on it now(PHS documents). Decent but not great paint, some areas of clear coming of. Option to put fresh paint to increase value on it vs cost of a paint job. Nice T tops. Solid Texas car around 85K miles, good floorboards, trunk, body. Interior is 2-3 years old camel tan/saddlewood (whatever the official color is).All trim pieces are there and in good shape. Brake system-past 3 months-rebuilt M/C , booster, rear calipers. 3.08 posi rear. TH 350C lock up with a shift kit and Continental 13" convertor.Fresh A/C charge converted to 134. 400-0.030 TRWs,lighter Mopar pins, beam polished cast rods new ARP bolts, balanced, decked block, 6x-4 heads 0.050 milled, Chamber smoothed, pocket ported and gasket matched, new Ferrera 2.11/1.77 longer valve, Comp 995 springs and retainers. Harland Sharp 1.5 roller rockers.Gasket matched Performer intake, 73 Pontiac Q jet. HO baffled oil pan, Mellings pump. Summit 2801 cam.Chrome factory type valve covers and chrome 14x3 aircleaner. RARE HO manifolds with 2.5 outlets, Torque Tech mandrel 2.5 down pipes, into hi flow 2.5 dual cats and an H pipe. Dynomax turbo mufflers into 2.5 Dynomax mandrel tailpipes.Passes sniffer if needed as is with the cats, no longer required in Texas. Good solid car needs a better home than being a daily driver.I would think having the orignal 301 and a 400 in it for driving would make it desirable to an "original" guy or a "performance driver". More value with a plain jane 455 in it? |

Just a guess. Maybe in the $8,000 to $12,000 range. I know that is a large sweep, but not having any pics to look and the body and interior kind of hamper a closer guess. Having the original 301 turbo is a plus. The fact that you have the PHS docs to prove that it is a t-top S.E. car helps also. If it were painted and decalled correctly with the 301 turbo, it might even fetch over $15,000.

Here you go! Pics.
I guess if a fresh paint and Turbo 301 in it boosted it that much it could be worth doing that. I would just think a 400 would be more desireable. |

I believe that the 400 is more desireable for the person who wants to drive the car.But I agree that including the original engine is a definite plus and an incentive to the originality buffs.
I own an 81 that was originally a 301 non-turbo car. That engine was the most pathetic excuse for a v-8 that I had ever driven and I happily sent it to the scrap yard. Look at all of the hemi-clone cudas etc.. I dont believe that they would be more valuable with their original 318's and they certainly arent as much fun.I don't know about you guys but when people come up to talk to me about my car they want to know if it's fast, The cars look performace oriented and with the 301 I would not have been able to out-run a mini van. Now my car is not "fast" but it is much more fun and I would not need a quart of oil to do a burn-out if I so desire. This may all sound juvenile to some of you but we did not fall in love with these cars because they look like they get good gas mileage. Sorry for getting off topic.....What was the question again? |

If you want a better range of value, sign up at TAC, www.transamcountry.com. We have several guys that can pinpoint, usually within $500.00 what a car can/will sell for.
After viewing your pics, I'm gonna stick with my first thoughts. It's a very nice driver but the unoriginality hurt the value, even with the original drivetrain. Remember, the hardcore Firebird guys WANT the origianl drivetrain, and will pay a premium for it.

It's a little over stock. I built it for my kids daily driver and a small cam. Enough to get it in the 14s @ 96 mph at one of the PSNs with the old tight torque convertor. A bigger cam and it would pick up a fair amount with the heads on it, and stil be tame.
