Post Ok, Let's get into Carb Spacers. Technical.

Basic senerio.

**** Dominator single carb. Victor intake and max power race only. ****

I want Actual input.

We have the Wilson, the Super Suckers, TD swirl technology, etc, etc spacers.
1/2", 1", 2" etc, etc. Or even none after testing.

What worked for you with actual ET, 60 ft'er and mph gains. Or Dyno hp & torque gains. Then you basic combo.
I don't want what worked for your buddy. Thanks.

I have tested various spacers on my Victor 4500 deal.Currently using 1" Phenolic, mached to plenum, and 1/2" 4 hole under carb.Seems to work well with my combo.660 roller cam,mid 270"s duration.I have recently puchased a Wilson Manifolds 1-1/2" spacer to try out. This is a one peice radiused, spacer they claim will work very well.I won't be trying this one for a while until I obtain some data on work I have just done to the plenum and current spacers mentioned.Gaby at Wilson is an extremely smart guy and very helpfull with providing information on their products. We will see later this summer if the radiused spacer out perfoms my current set up.

On the dynomajig we could see actual gains from shaped spacers and bigger carb. The HP gains were a joke cost wise, but thats not where you want to look for benefits. We could see a much smoother fuel curve thru the pull with a shaped spacer but they only seem to have a beneficial effect when air velocity is sky high? Or was it when the MASS of air/fuel charge became dense enough to resist the vacuum in the port? I dont think my 482 cared one way or the other with a 1050 cfm carb. The shaped spacer really seemed to stand out under the extensively modified early 8896 1140cfm Im not real sharp on this stuff but it was easy to see on the dyno readouts.
The Victor had all the tricks to herd air around.
I think when you get so big with a single carb the air/fuel charge mass resists the vacuum of the port and would rather lay down on the turtle. A little bit like trying to divert my large mass from the fridge to the workshop. Its easier for me to stop at the fridge but thats not where I need to be. Its my impression thats where a shaped spacer shines, getting the now heavy charge moving off in the right direction right out of the throttle bores.
Doesnt necessarily translate to bigger HP number but better brake specific numbers indicating more fuel being burned more completely.
This is all somewhat static testing, put the car on the track there may be effects not obvious on the dyno.
Likewise, what is it you want the spacer to do? Increase plenum volume? Promote directionallity?
I dont see how you can make anything useful of other peoples spacer deals unless you just like taking a poll or promoting discussion (8-)

dude, i used the reher-morrison shear-plate with their tapered spacer on the new engine with the high ports and a highly modified victor. it was good for about 8hp at the peak, but there was another 8-10 everywhere on the dyno pull from 5400-7400. i don't know the differece at the track because with the intake spacers and the domminator it won't fit under the hood;but the two speedtek foggers make up for the loss.hehehe

On my 462 I had a 1" cloverleaf spacer that I blended to the Victor. It added about 5hp over no spacer on the dyno. added a Turtle and picked up a whole nother (1) HP. Put on a 2 " super sucker and lost 9 HP.
Opening the heads up some more and getting the intake to match a big tapered square one. will see what happens....

Question

BUMP......... ??????????????

So only four people use spacers and have real world results?

Dude - 1" open helped, 1.5" same, 2" got worse. Run 1" open. This is on the dyno--

I have alot of experience but my data is useless to others. My data is with my combo, cam, cid, head cc's, intake runner length, carb size, rpm range, plenum size, runner csa, etc. You can add a spacer on the dyno and pick up hp but loose a ton when it is in the car if you dont have enough carb to hood clearance.

Ditto, what he said.

I've had two similar engines on the dyno just hours apart and what worked on one didn't do anything for the other. As you know subtile differences can be important. As PP mentioned in post #2, a four holer going into an open usually works for me.

Sometimes you find power on the pump and in the car it's not faster. My opinon, the best results for intake tuning is done at the track.

Sorry for no data but I'm not sure that it would necessarily mean anything.

Talking

I already know variables make a difference. This isn't my first rodeo. LOL

Just looking for what seems to work all round. Peoples different combo's etc. 4 hole 2 hole open. 1" 2" Super sucker, 1" 2". TD swirl spacer 1" 2"
Plastic, wood, aluminum. phenolic, etc.

I would like so see posted track tests.

Just didn't want to go out and buy 25 different spacers. Mainly looking for what didn't work on the majority of applications under 6800 rpm.

There you go again using engineering in your posts and common sense, John. I told you about that deal. I got a plastic "dog do do" you can wire
on to the grill Kenny, maybe that will make you as fast as John.

Tom V.

Just because it "ran" on a dyno doesn't mean that
it will work on the track.

Keith Wilson is in Florida, you are in Florida. Wilson makes carb spacers for a living. I would get into my car and drive to the east side of the state and ask him the questions. He would tell you the truth about the different ones. Just
say you talked to Tom.

For what it's worth....

I bought 2 used HVH 1" super suckers from Jack and ran them for a few years. They picked me up .03-.05 over open spacers.

I was then told that shear plates were the latest and greatest thing. I spent around $600 on Wilson Manifolds custom 1" shear plates. Last week we went back to back on the BES dyno. The Wilson Shear plates made 1 HP more than the super suckers.

Kenny, If you want to try the super sucker(s), I'll send them down to you to try.

2" Super Sucker was worth 10 hp on the chassis dyno with my combo. 530 ci, KRE High Ports, 1150 Dominator, Port Matched Victor.

That's what I'm talking about. Yes I'm interested. Jack told me his car picked up too with them. His dad's car realy picked up on the chassis dyno from what I hear too ?????

How ya want to get em here? E-mail me. Thanks, Ken.

Pulled my 535 engine and stripped the top end.
Awesome top end assembly is for sale, Cheap.
Getting ready to do some track testing with my hyd roller pump gas (10.5-1) 535 with basic cleaned up out of the box 300cfm E-heads to use as a reference when the CV-1 Heads get here.

Another Question: I see that Jegs has a carb spacer kit with 4 different replaceable centers. Haven't called yet to see if they are for the 4500 series (and doen't say in the catalog either) to fit the opening area of the Victor. Has anyone tried this kit?
