Most likely your base coat is reacting with something under it.

If you are talking about that spiderweb type wrinkling, its definitely reacting to something under it. Did you use the right primer and did it dry completely? I just had a similar problem and had to take everything down to bare metal.

If you sanded through the clear when rerepairing your paint job, there's a better than good chance that your freshly sprayed basecoat went down into the 1st finish and caused the wrinkling. (Most basecoat reducers/stabilizers are very "hot" and will raise some problems when the 1st basecoat absorbs this fresh coat of basecoat+reducer.) Try a faster reducer so that the basecoat flashes faster and the reducer gets outta there before it has time to sit around and raise hell with the old finish. Or "dust in" the color spraying it mist coats. (careful, too dry and you'll create adhesion problems w/ clear) Or spot prime to seal off affected area. Or spray a sealer down to put something between the old finish and the new finish. I can usually fix most rerepair lifting with lighter coats or faster reducer. irgoatmike

I dont think its a problem with the new base going over the old base. I had it happen on new repop fenders too. It may be I didnt let the wax/grease romover evaporate all the way????

Hmm, did you remove the black factory E coat or just scuff it? Maybe the basecoat reacted with the factory primer? Did the wrinkling occur on the 1st basecoat or further into the coats? Could be many different things. If the Ecoat on the repop fender was a lacquer base then basecoat could react. Wax and Grease remover should be wiped off the panel before it dries as the residue left on the panel could cause problems. (ie. fisheyes) I'd say let it dry and scuff wrinkles down and reapply mist coats of color. irgoatmike

I scuffed up the primer on the repops. This happened a few coats in so Im thinking it may have been the wax/grease remover. I will wait until tomorrow, hopefully it gets warmer again in order for me to spray the car.
I'll post my results.
Thanks again guys

Try using a waterborn primer. I use one from ppg. Ask your paint rep.

Mitch,
This can still happen to the professionals also. One thing to keep in mind is to try to use the solvents and paints from the same company. Do not use Sherwin Williams base and PPG clear as an example. This has happened to me also and had a paint rep come to see. Most companies do testing on their own products so this doesn't happen.
I had nothing but trouble with Sherwin Wrinkles don't like it. Sikkens is more costly but it's worth the money.
Hope you get it sorted out. DB.

Be sure not to use rags that were dried while using a fabric softner sheet. Whatever is in those dryer sheets will transfer onto the fabric and then transfer onto your panels when you wipe them down. Mainly causes fisheye.

What about the filtering on the air supply? If you are getting any kind of oil bypass it could cause some problems too.

Oil in the line will cause fisheyes, not lifting. Lifting is caused by the solvents.

I'm sure its not from the wax and grease remover. Your basecoat is reacting with the cheap primer on your repo fenders.

Yeah, but if it was reacting to the primer on them wouldnt it be everywhere? Its only on a few spots, the rest looks good

What temp are you shooting in and what reducers are you using. Usually a wrinkle is a result of a bad mixture. Also Ive seen some adhesion problems cause this because of using the wrong agent to clean and prep the area. Oils mainly penetrating from below the paint.

Sh*t happens, to fix this, sand problem areas 320 sandpaper first. Spray two light coats of Dupont 275 S 2k waterborne prime-filler. This sands very easy and you won't have any bad reaction from the solvent in your basecoat.
