Wow Doug! Our intakes were cast two days apart? What is your crossover date 4-30-70? That seems more for a late 70? Mine is 6-1-70 which is probably more for a early 71? It still has a 9098 choke on it? Weird Pontiac stuff!

since the cross over was the same 69,70,71,i'm just guessing that they may have just kept using what was on the shelf.one of mine is 7-22-70,have to check the others later.crossover is out in the garage and to cold to dig it out.

Giles,

Sorry it took me so long to get back with you on the stud/bolt intake crossover question. On my 71 TA, build date 06, drivers side has bolt front, stud back. On the passenger side, both studs. Hope this helps. The TA has never been apart and has 48k miles. I recently purchased a 71 Formula with the HO motor. I know that on the passenger side they are both studs, I'll check the drivers side for you next time I have a chance. I'll post some pics later.

Paul

Default Round Port Fuel Pump???

Talk about "crazy prices"!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NOS-1...spagenameZWDVW

Spotted this one last week & was surprised to see where it ended, but I know for a fact that it has been OBSOLETE at GM for over 20 years.
This one is "correct for ALL 70 & 71 T/A's (& 400/455 4bbls),but doesn't appear to be a "judge" ("A" body) application.

Giles,

Good questions on studs as people have asked me those questions, and I don't have the answers.

Here is an underhood shot of a 71 Formula 455HO I bought a couple of months back. I'll post some my Trans Am later. The TA is in better shape.

My 7/71 TA has studs on the passenger side, yet the drivers side foward crossover mount is a bolt and the rear is a stud, same as another posters 6/71 car. I was the 1st to open this engine, still had the original "S" camshaft inside when I disassembled.

My 7/71 HO's block is the later 485428 casting.. Norwood car..

Different pump used on the A-body cars. The flexible fuel supply and return hose pipes are oriented towards the driver's side on A-body cars, rather than towards the passenger side on 'birds.

Thanx Paul, more detail pix when you can. It is a time capsule to have an original HO engine. Love to see pix w/o cleaner and what those markings, decals, and etc. are.

Thanks! I know this is an obscure topic, but those unrestored cars help!

Default POSI trunk decal?

i recently met this guy with a nice unrestored 71 T/A and i noticed this decal on the inside of his trunk lid. i never seen this one before on a T/A and i'm just wondering how many other cars have it. i believe its a van nuys car. my 71 van nuys car shows no signs of ever having it.

COOL! That's the missing mystery decal on my early build '71 T/A! Now we know that Pontiac DID install the limited slip warning decal on some '71s.

Default Hurting the Faithful

This one will hurt all us HO lovers and I feel a bit dirty over it but... I finally am getting a shot at doing a fully maxed SD build. Paul who we helped with the previous SD that was in the SD/HO shootout dyno article has set me (and I enlisted Dan to help) loose on a fully maxed SD. Now we will see what a truly potent SD can do against my latest fully maxed HO that is talked about earlier in this thread.

Boy do I feel like sand bagging! I can not though, Paul is a close friend and we will pull every last ounce we can out for him.

Not sure there will be any well wishers on this thread for us but lets turn it into something fun. My HO made 403 hp and 530+ tq. Paul's well detialed and fairly hard pushed SD made 395 hp and 500+ tq.

Put you guesses in on what you think it will do hp and tq wise and why the SD or the HO may prevail in one way or another.

I will not give up what I think yet.

Mark

I love the HO motor and think it's underrated by most people, especially outside the Pontiac world, but I don't think many people here would wish anything less than the best for the SD numbers. Let the numbers be what they may! Are you tweeking the cams in a similar way to the versions of the 068 in your HO builds, and will you be using the 041 cam or the 744 profile? My guess is if you stick with the 744, the HO will win again by a small margin, if you use the 041 then I think the SD will come out on top this time. Either way, this will be very interesting! Thanks for the great posts and keep the updates coming!

We will be using a 744 profile as that is what the rules require.

The 041 cam within the confines of our rules and max compression for an SD would actually hurt it. That has been one of the current problems with the SD's. To much .050 duration for the compression.

Pontiac needed a cam half way between the 068 and 744 in duration for the HO and SD. That would have been perfect in conjunction with their compression ratio's.
