Hopefully you have a crank that a pilot bearing will fit in, I had to get a brass pilot bearing and turn it down to fit in the crank of a 1967 400.

thanks guys...it looks as if it will fit fine. i thought about trying to remove my old one and swap it over to the new motor....guess that is a bad idea ? is the bearing different than the "housing" it rides in ? are they two different part numbers ??

Pack grease in the old one, stick a pilot snout in it and hit firmly with a light hammer, it'll hydraulic itself out to be installed in the new motor. Better yet, buy new one, tap it in place and you'll have one in both cranks

I agree with KYflier buy a new one. They aren't that expensive. The do make a bushing and a bearing for this purpose I believe. Either one will work...BB

Keep in mind if you use the bearing instead of the bushing that the bellhousing alignment needs to be closer/tighter. This has an effect on shift quality and trans life. In my experience the bushing works fine, and no real advantage over using the bearing.

No, your fine, the one on the left just doesn't have a pilot bearing/bushing in it. The one on the right has a pilot bearing in it.

Since the pic on the right shows a bearing instead of a bushing, I wouldn't try to remove it. Just get a new one and install in your "new" crank.
Every time I've tried to remove a pilot bearing it has come apart and was useless. You can remove a bushing with the method KYflier recommended. Good luck! |
