Thinking of buying a 69 Bonne wagon and it needs a nose job. I'm a little spooked as I have heard of this being a problem. Is that nose piece really Endura or just some kind of plastic? What is availability like on NOS or good used ones?
Any help would be apreciated.

Go for the wagon! I've got a '69 Bonnie wagon and it's quite a (lot of!) car.
Yes the nose pieces are somewhat of a problem. They are Endura but they have thinner edges than the GTO parts and are susceptable to losing chunks. There was a guy on here that was supposed to be working on a nose molded in a new material around the original steel cores, but I haven't heard from him lately.

Is the original savable? The one I am looking at has lots of deep cracks but it is "all there" (not missing any peices)

I'd think that you could do all of the fixes that are applicable to the GTO Enduras. There are parts out there in good shape if you do some looking. I wouldn't let the cracks in the beak scare you away from a car that you like.
On a side note... start clearing room in the garage now if you're gonna bring it home. The Bonneville is muuuucchhhh llllloooooooonnnnngggggger and wwwiiiiiiiiiddddder than an A-body!

Freudian slip, the car I was looking at is a convertible, not a wagon. The wagon I have been keeping an eye out for is a 69 LeMans Safari wagon.
By the way bought the car, they seem like too good a deal for the money, Nice clean unmolested convertible for GTO parts car money. When I was a kid my dad always had Olds 98's, when he traded a 72 for a 75 the added length of the crash bumpers led to him having to cut out a hole in the front of the garage for the bumper to fit into with the door missing the rear bumper by a fraction of an inch. There is a reason they called them l'il GTO's.

Here are some photos from the seller.
Car was Expresso brown but owner gave it a tape and shoot non Pontiac red about 20yrs ago. Endura inserts and door jambs etc still red. I will probably reshoot it Expresso. Car looks to be and seller claims it is rustfree and garaged since new, interior seems to support that since every 69 I see has all kinds of problems with dashpad and instument bezel etc. I guess I will know when it gets here .

ouch, thats almost 10% of what the car is worth. Probably cheaper than fixing the old one though. I'll keep an eye out, thanks.

I'm happy now how cheap I got the car but the downside is there also, lousy resale value is bad news because I always put way too much money into cars like this and for a guy used to GTO's I am quickly discovering how ignored these cars are by the repo industry.
Good with the bad, I like that idea of buying parts cars, wonder if my wife would understand?

I told my wife when we got married:
I will have old cars or young girlfriends, take your pick and then keep your mouth shut. She picked and 10 years later she has held up her end pretty well. (too bad since I was hoping she would reneg then leaving the other option open to me!!)

Rebuild your original. It won't work like an original but who are you going to run into in a parking lot these days? I have picked up two NOS beaks over the years and they both ended up disintegrating; the endura material just seems to dry out and big chunks end up coming off. Totally wasted my money. The paint on used ones seems to preserve them.

Yeah I have one too and it sits out side and the dash is fine but the nose isn't either. Some one was making a Plastic/fiberglass remake of the nose and I have seen one of these on a car, but it also took a lot of work around where the arrow head goes because of imperfections. As far as the populararity of the car. Drive it at 70 down the freeway, the ride will make you fall in love and if you know a bunch of young girl friends, the car will seat 8 tiny butts comfortabley, and it's a drop top and those are always cool.
My wife hates mine and wants it out of here but, I'm the 4th owner, I know the history since birth, and its a optioned out 2 door broughm with the 428 HO and 3.08 saf-T-track. I don't think it's leaving for a while!!

Just a heads-up about Replica Plastics...
I, unfortunately, have first hand experience with their products. To say the quality is less than good would be an understatement. Granted the parts I've seen were much more complex than the '69 "beak" (1973 Grand Am nose) they still give an indication of what to expect from them. It's possible to think that '69 nose might be (more easily) usable based on it's relatively small size, but count on a basic shell of the part. It'll be up to you to figure out how to actually get it mounted to the car. I had bought the Grand Am nose from them as the preferred supplier (In Design) was out of production at the time. The Replica Plastics parts were basically garbage and their return policy sucks. I ended up buying the In Design parts when they started production again.

[/QUOTE],,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I think you might be talking about me,,, I was working on reproducing the nose pieces,, I have the origional one done, that I intend to use on my bonneville,, I still need to make the mold and find some old nose pieces that I can get the metal support structure from then I can finish them up I kinda got side tracked by my wife into remodeling our house, [[we all know how that works I'm sure] Here are some pictures of the one I made,, notice that I made it to eliminate the gap between the hood and nose where the rubber gasket usually goes,, and fits the hood lines better,, I guess I could make them either way, I plan on getting back on this project real soon,, Had some trouble loading pictures because of size,, these are the only 2 that would load,, but you get the idea, I hope ![]() If I had enough people interested, and could help me find some old nose pieces I could get the mounting structure off of, I could get some made,,, The out side shell would be fiberglass for ease of finishing but the inside would be a solid composit material that would be a direct replacement part,, just paint and bolt it on in the origional holes, with the origional backing structure,,, Last edited by BADRAT; 04-16-2008 at 07:18 PM. |
