I have looked at car forums and places to post about cars for years. Owned a few Pontiacs. Signed up here and there. A few of these posts seemed interesting enough to reply to.
Whoever owns this car is entitled to their privacy. For someone to say a car is crushed is assuming an awful lot. Then to send off a message to another public forum that someone else’s car was crushed seems a bit over the line. It was all taken from a private response to a private question that was posted for the public. This is why we all spend a bunch of time being so cautious about our numbers on all of our cards. (This was a good point by someone else).
This car might be in his or her basement fully assembled with the tag on the firewall fully assembled (Seems like I remember them being in the engine compartment on firewall behind motor on older cars). (I will also make an assumption that it’s a man). Looks like he also said he didn’t have it. (I’m also assuming there is such a car and he does actually own it). From that brief description, it sounds like a lot of the important parts are there. (Again, assuming it really came from that car). It could be anywhere. 48 pieces in a neighbors crawl space, farm buried in the weeds, a relative, etc. I’ve seen them all over and in all conditions. We have all heard or experienced the guy who just wants left alone and it’s not for sale. This may stop that. Maybe, wanted to see what people did. Like the guy who owned the chocolate factory.
Looks like a few of you think you know a lot about the car like you were trying to buy it and didn’t and there is a grudge. (Saw that posted by someone else and can’t take credit for it either). Maybe you owned it and took it apart. So you do know.
The a/c thing was either a mistake at the factory, added by one of the owners, or maybe he made a mistake and it didn’t have it.
This is a hobby to most and a way to meet people and enjoy cars. There are lots of cars put back together in whatever fashion and it’s nice to see them for that ten miles per year go down the road in America. It also employs a lot of people for parts and assembly. I’m not saying changing numbers around is right or wrong. Not going there. 50% of people just like to see them. 50% of them couldn’t care less. 1% of the 50% are worried about someone else’s car that the coat hanger is not right. (I saw that too). (I don’t even want to comment about that whole thing).
It’s great you are passionate about something, but a few of you are messing with someone else’s privacy. There could be a part of this supposed car bolted to one of yours. It may have been parted out 20 years ago. I’d like to see one of these cars, but wouldn’t go too far out of my way.

Just so there is no misunderstanding, I spoke by telephone with the seller/owner of the 73 SD Formula. He told me directly, without any question, this car was scrapped in Southern California in the mid 80's. He said nothing to me about air conditioning, don't know where that came from.

The only pieces of the car he had left were drive train componets. No body parts remained. No car in the basement, nothing in the crawl space, or buried in the field. I discussed buying the drive train parts, they were priced higher than I wanted to pay, so I passed on them. No grudge here. Don't care who bought them, or how much was paid.

I do feel strongly that tag swapping is poor form. I know others have a different view. They are entitled to their opinion, as I am mine. But there is also a legal issue, it is called Felony VIN Tampering. It is law, not someones opinion.

As far as posting that the car was scrapped, maybe some would be unconcerned about buying a tag swapped car. But if it happened to me, I would pursue the perpetrator with unfailing determination. I feel a duty to protect others who might have the same concern about buying a swapped tag car, that is why I support publishing the VIN of scrapped cars.

So, in case anyone missed it, it was a 73 Formula SD455, 4 speed, Admiralty Blue, White interior. VIN = 2U87X3N139502 The VIN was posted on the ebay auction for all to see, so there is no violation of privacy by posting it here as well.

Yes, this is a hobby that I enjoy. I too like to see cars restored and showed. I hope you don't think I am "bashing" here, that is not my intent. My intent is to set the record straight as it seems you may have had some misunderstandings.

I also spoke to him on the phone. He told me it had a/c, which I didn't think was available with a manual trans. Maybe he just didn't remember it properly. Either way it was a rare care to say the least. It's too bad the body was scrapped!!

The car didnt have a/c since your correct ramair3formula it was not an option on a manual SD car.

Thanks for reply. Owned (2) 64 GTOs. Not counting the parts car. Both converted to tripower and were automatics. Put bias ply tires back on. Not good. Goat64 was taken. The answer is, no, I’m not qualified to talk tech about these cars. I’ve posted a few places. Just not enough time to keep up. Before all this it was phone calls and newsletters. It doesn’t seem right, to me, to post a private message to the public. That was it. The rest is whatever it is. I know I don’t want to start a debate over which was better between the GTO or the Firebird. This, I do know about.

understand where you're coming from goat 64, but at the same time that reply to me was posted because of the fact that both the VIN and cowl tags were stated to be off the car and the car gone. all the information in that message was basically available from the original e-bay listing, including the VIN. to whom to those tags belong? the scrap yard that got the car body. no questions about it in my book. there is a very high likelihood that within 1-2 years this car might resurface as a complete numbers matching SD, which would be fraud unless the seller or new owner discloses the fact that it is a vin-tag swapped car if they ever decide to sell. There is nothing private about a vin.

i love the darker colors on the birds, that one is stunning. i like the fact that it has all is trim in place, closest i've seen as to what mine should look like except mine was UAW. (Ugly-Ass White).

I have a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 1973 with a Hurst Ligtning Rod shifter,
suddenly i cann't put the shifter in the first gear, however the 2 and 3 gear
does work.

I was at Indian Uprising two/three years back,when this guy is crawling under our 73,I asked"Do you want to buy it?"
He was a guy about late 30's early 40's with his dad,he said they had a 73 SD 4spd Formula and he was trying to convince his dad to resto it,sound familiar to anyone?
