Hi, First of all, I am new here and have been watching to see what type of forum this is and all seems to be cool here so here I am. Now I have a problem. I have a 2001 grand am with the 3400 in it. I recently had to replace both intake manifold gaskets. This was a 6 month process and sat in one spot the entire time. Any ways, I got it all back together and I started, it ran ok except one cylinder wasnt fireing. I tried to find out which one but couldnt finsih because it ran out of gas. So today, I got some gas in it and now its worse. It seems that the entire front of the engine is dead and number 5 on the back of the engine as well, I pulled the coils off of those cylinders and it doesnt change the way it runs. It idles eratically and sputters. Funny thing is is that all manifolds get hot as if they are firing. All have spark to the plug, I pulled the plugs to check them, all spark and are in good shape. Now my check engine light flashes every once in a while which means a misfire. Ill reset the code and sometimes the check engine light will remain on, no flashing. Sometimes it wont come on at all. Im lost at this point, any help would be great, thanks.

Running it out of gas can clog the injectors with all the crap that accumulates in the tank. There is a fine sock where the fuel rail attaches to the injectors about 3/16 inch in diameter. It sits down inside of the injector and can be removed and cleaned. It is the final place to stop contaminants before they reach the injector tip. I have seen these plugged solid with sediment and stopping the fuel flow to the injector. This is a possibility given you ran it out of fuel before all this missing started. You might check there first. Remember you have to have 3 ingredients to fire a cylinder, fuel and air, compression, and spark. Missing any one of these will cause a miss. Do a systematic search and you'll find the problem.

If it is hot it could be lean.

I would unplug the wire from each injector to see if the injectors are firing.
Sounds to me like it is a fuel issue or fuel pressure.

You can also hook up a preassure guage to the shrader valve to see what the fuel pressure is.

Alright, thanks for the advice guys, after messing with it for a bit I have found that one of my injectors is hissing at me. When I stick something on it and wiggle it, it goes away, gets worse, depending on which way I wiggle. I doesnt leak gas bad, just a few drops here and there. So I guess I need to pull the rails off and find out why they arent sealing correctly. Thanks for the help everyone. Im going to mess with it tomorrow, its getting a little dark here. Thanks again. The o rings on the injectors need to be replaced.
