1. Anyone know the correct factory color for the vent pull knobs? Mine appear to have been chrome at one time (worn badly) not certain if orignal from 65.
2. How do the knobs come off, twist? Don't see any set screws etc. Maybe crush them and glue on the new ones? Thanks

The knobs were chrome plated.I have not taken mine off yet but from others use a dremel or hack saw blade and cut a line to get to the shaft.

Use a dremel cut-off tool and slice the old know, twist and it will fall apart and off the shaft. PY sells a excellent plastic chrome knob, you just have to drill it our slightly and screw if on the shaft. Worked great for me!

We use the earlier radio knobs with a setscrew as a replacement. Get the old off, file a flat, add knob, tighten setscrew, done. This way you don't have to worry about the chrome peeling again.

Bob,
When you say "earlier" are these Radio Knobs ones that look like the 65 dash knobs? I think I read that big pontiacs (probably 65 or earlier) had die cast vent knobs that work too. Sounds like a great idea especially if they look very similar to the originals.

I think what we used were 64 knobs and are identical. They may have been heater control or AC knobs, but have a setscrew and work great.

Bob,
I think you're right about them being radio knobs, they have a flat side in the hole. Chris |

ALL knobs for the radio are chrome as is the vent knobs...the reason they look yellow is that the chrome wore off..they are CHROME ...the VENT knobs are chrome...cut them off get new ones and drill the hole slightly larger..then use weather stripping glue to secure..

Guys..
Where do you find these? I checked Ames, PY [as Karfever said they have] and Year One and noone sells just the chrome vent knobs, or even the radio, or a/c knobs that some of you guys use. Thanks Mike |

I've tried that before Larry and I was not satisfied with the results. As cheap and easy as it is to replace them, I replaced them on my latest 65.

As I posted before, I've tried it on the plastic chrome. IIRC those knobs in plastic are only about $4 each. So by the time you buy the primer and the chrome paint you've spent as much as you would for new knobs. Just a little labor and some epoxy and you've got a better job, IMHO.

I used the repop plastic knobs on my vents and on the Custom Autosound stereo of my 65.A little work with the Dremel and I made them a tight press fit so if I ever need to remove them I won't 'F'up the stereo.
