How do I determine the cause of a week steering system? The symptom is, at a standstill, the steering system has no power. When I try to turn the wheel the power steering pump squeals, and the wheel will not turn. Any forward or backward movement and the steering is fine. Fluid level is fine, also. The pump was new to the rebuild (which was 15 years ago) but the box is original. The car has 5K on it since the rebuild. How do I test the steering box vs. the pump, or is it something else?

My guess would be the pump.
Make sure your pressure hose hasn't collapsed.

I would suggest that you have someone turn the steering wheel while the car is running in park while you watch the pump and pulley as squeels usally means the belt is slipping.
I had the same problem and it ended up being the tention of the belt, I thought it was tight enough to the touch. I ended up buy a slightly shorter belt that allowed me to tigten it up even more and all my problems went away.

did you bleed the air out of the systems?? Plus, someone may have rebuilt it incorrectly.. There are different sized balls on the inside that have to be alternatively spaced..If not done correctly, the unit will not function correctly.. try the air in the systems 1st...

I thought the belt was tight enough but will check it first. I hope it is that simple. It is the last thing to resolve before I can move onto my '70 Formula do over. Thanks.
