Um, I look at it a number of ways. Am I prepared for the area that I live in? yes. Do I dwell on it all the time, No.

When I grew up it was very common to be without power/phone and trapped in your own home. We never gave it a thought. We had all we needed to live for weeks at a time.

About 13 years ago I got back into home canning. This led me to more sites and being prepared. Have always had the guns and ammo part since both the wife and me are ex Army.

Over the years we have prepared for being able to take care of ourselves for an extended period of time. I moderate a survival and preparedness forum under one of the gun sites.

My daughter was just here for the last month after being evacuated from Japan. They had a few items with them that after the quake and tsunami were very popular on base. She always laughed at the items I had them take over there but quickly woke up after having no power/heat/light/internet/cell service.

I am a firm believer in praying for the best but preparing for the worst. For some it seems to consume there lives but I refuse to buy in to that.

And for a nice light read fiction I would suggest "lights out" a little more serious would be "one second after" and of course there is always "Patriots" Just a few pieces of fiction that may make one think.

I can see that this makes perfect sense. Here we're only prone to dramatic thunderstorms and an occasional ice storm/outage.

A wind up am/fm/sw radio. a solar AA/AAA battery charger and batteries and a small 1 burner propane stove.

Batteries and flashlights sold out in 12 hours on base. There would have been other things that I wish they would have had but did not. The left the lamps back in the states that would have given light and heat. It was still snowing where they were when the quake struck.

I always look at the area where one lives. People in FL do not worry about cold. People in Colorado do. Some things are universal and some are not.
