Is the temperature light supposed to be on when you first turn the key to the "on" position?

No, only when you are cranking the engine. Unless the engine is overheated already.

Old Goat 67, thanks. I just got a new single prong switch and wanted to make sure everything was as it should be. I still have my temperature gun and it's not getting over 210-216 degrees.

Well, mine won't get over 185 degrees with a 180 thermostat.
