I've met a few, tell your stories. Thought I'd start the thread :
Cannot count how many guys claimed to have a 302 Boss that was a regular 2 barrel smogger engine ![]() We used to call Autozone in High school (guy we didn't like worked there) and ask for a radiator hose for a VW bug (this was way before the "new Bug" was introduced) My Mazda B2200 has a 5 liter four cylinder (No kidding) I built this engine that made so much power it pulled up so hard (with stock mounts) and bent the frame ![]() "I bored a 305 out to a 350 and then put stroker in it to make it 350 cubic inches"

I was showing a guy I knew an article about a Superbird that had never been sold(I think it was in Muscle Car Review) and had been moved around the dealership for years before they stashed it. They uncovered it, had like 5 miles on it. So I showed him and I said "check out this car, it was never sold" and he pointed at it and said "yes it was, it was called a Yellowbird" uh huh

My best friend, bless his heart.... bought this 355 from a local race shop. He tells everyone its a "race motor" and has almost 500HP. He also thinks its running 13:1 compression ... and he's running 93 octane. He's never put it in the 1/4 mile nor dynoed it, but if you listen to him take off down the road you can tell it has nowhere near that power.

Watch that new show on speed called "my ride" or something like that and you will hear all the goofy car stories and outlandish claims you ever want to hear.

A guy with a 69 goat explains to me how he has a 'big block' Pontiac engine in there.
I take the time to tell him there is no big or small block V8, they're all the same. Minutes later his dad introduces himself and starts to tell me about thier 'big block' Pontiac engine. I remained silent the second time. ___________ Some guys have thier own little words for things, this is from one guy in particular.... Edelbrock - idle brook (no jokes, he repeatedly said it) crank journals - crank generals main caps - main cups (i suppose this one isnt too bad) distributor - dista beater |

In basic training there was a "car guy" who was telling a couple others about his 69 Goat with a factory 427 HEMI.

Then I explained to him that they never made a full frame F-body, Then he says well screw them I'll just stick to a S10..

Two stories come to mind-
The first, I was at a car show with my buddy. We were standing by his really nice '65 GTO tri-power, 4 speed convertible when a guy came up with his girlfriend. He was going on and on about how he used to have a car "JUST LIKE THIS ONE". Upon further questioning it turned out that he had a '68 Camaro. ![]() ![]() ![]() :ro lleyes:![]() The second, a friend of a friend has a fairly decent looking '68 Firebird 'vert with a 400 hood. I finally ask him about the motor, if it is a real 400 car? He tells me "No, It's a 500 HP small block Chevy". Not saying you can't get 500 HP from a 350, but if you heard this thing run you'd know he had no idea...

I remember one now. Standing in NAPA when one of the sales guys started telling me about his fast elcamino. He had went to the drags and he ran a 16.20 BUT he was asleep at the light. It took him a few seconds to realize the lights had dropped. His reaction time was almost 3 seconds. So he had a 13 second ride... You could see his heart break as I informed him he coulda sat there for a week and his car still woulda posted the 16.20 since the clock doesn't start till you actually move.

My best friend (whom passed away in 2000)
had a '68 GTO convertible with a transplanted 455 in there. He had a 455HO decal on the air cleaner (in fact the whole air cleaner was from a '71 455HO GTO). The UPS man was delivering something, (and I was there to see this comment- he stated the it was rare to have a 455 in a '68 GTO. He then made himself look even worse by stating that most '68 GTO's came with the 389 with the "Six Pack"![]()

I got stopped one morning coming home from working all night back around 1998. It was at a NC Highway Patrol road block in front of a rough trailer park a few miles from my home. I was driving my unrestored and somewhat tired looking Limelight Green 69 GTO Judge. I pulled out my license and handed it to the cop. He looked at my license and then stared at the hood for a second, where it said "Ram Air' and asked me if it had a 442 under the hood. I said no, it has a 400. He said 'Those 442 Judges were a little faster' and handed my back my license. I said, Yeah, and drove off.

Mine is a little different. Happened about 3 years back in Muskogee, OK at an auto parts store. I was in there needing some parts for my GTO that had just broken a rear axle shaft. One of the things I needed was a metal brake line ( with the flared ends ). I asked the counterman for one 3 feet long. He disappeared behind the rows of parts on shelves, etc and emerged a moment later with a flared line. After glancing at it, I commented that is looked longer than 36". He took the line, set it on the floor. The floor had the 12 by 12 tiles and it is not uncommon to use them as a measurement reference. He said, "see?, it's exactly 3 feet long").
The only problem was, he had placed the brake line 'diagonally' and not across the tiles. First I thought he was joking with me but, ,he was sincere. I thought that it was so unusual for a grown man to do that. Tactfully, I mentioned that to measure correctly, he would have to place the line 'across' the tiles. ![]() I still chuckle about this to this day.

I have no shortage of idiots here at the shop. You run into all types in the auto repair industry.
A couple funny ones I remember from way back that happened to my buddy with his '66 Mustang with 302, Comp Cams 306 Magnum, tunnel ram with 2 600DP Hollies - first one was the guy that came up complimenting his car and stated that the only thing he needed now was to add a tunnel ram.. Another guy came up to him and was complimenting him, but just had to know one thing - "was it bored" Jeez, what idiots. |

I convinced a former employee of mine when he was a newbie that if a car I bought was older model he had to change the air in the tires because it got stale from being in there so long.
Sure enough my salesman, after I had left, seen him out on the lot letting the air out of tires on a 88 bronco, so he ask him WFT are you doing?????????? Ahhhhhhhhhh, well Rich says we got change the air, he about fell over on the ground from laughing |
