jumping:1970-1972 A BODY SKELETON SHELL
Need some advice on my 1970 GTO. After some hard looks at my car, I'm concidering just buying a shell. Anyone purchase one and if you did, how did it fit and any recomendations on where to find good quality? Would buying a [ATTACH] shell de-value the car? Some things to think about: Is it a numbers matching car, are you keeping it or plan on selling it, what about the vin plate? That's what would worry me.
I have a numbers matching 68 convertible. I don't think I'd buy a new body if they made it, but that's just me. My vin is stamped on the firewall too. You're not gonna get that with a new body. I would think it would drop the value of the car. But if you plan on keeping the car and depending on how much rust you have, this could be a good option. How much is it?

With reproduction sheet metal there's always some minor differences from oem. They can't be selling a lot of them......I'd be concerned where/what the differences are. It'd be a shame for the consumer to be the manufactures test/quality control dept.
I know these were made for a Chevelle, are these shells Pontiac "A" body specific? |

here is the link to the "A" body I found!! I do have alot of rust the back window frame is almost gone in one corner. Body man told me he would have to cut off back fenders and start from the inside out to put car back together. Trunk floor needs replaced and trunk spring frame where it hinges is almost gone. need new trunk deck, Hood fenders etc.!!! |

For $11000 canadian, there is no way I would go that route.
And if you do then you get into the vin issues, which if you do a search there is a lot of opinions on. I was heavily into 69 Mustangs when dynacorn first released their Mustang shells. Fix the body you already have. Much simpler. And either way you will still need the new fenders, hood, trunk lid, etc. IMHO Russ |

That shell is no where near correct for a 70 GTO and you would have a bastard when you were done. DOesn't sound like your car needs a shell to me, just a little metalwork. That shell won't come with any panels to bolt to it.
This is a no brainer.

That's a Chevelle shell. When the 70-72 Pontiac A-body convertibles reach the popularity and value of 70 Chevelles we'll get those quarters...

When I first look at that shell I think "gee, that could fix so many rust problems (lower cowl, base of windshield, etc)". Then I think "...but then I'd have to swap all the exterior sheet metal, even the roof. That means busting about a billion spot welds then putting them back". Then I feel like puking.
The only purpose I can see for these is building a Chevelle from scratch...and then lies the VIN problem...
