I asked because no one in the private sector goes with reman engines, at least if they have any common sense. Only difference between a factory reman and an overhaul is the "0" time deal. BTW it has been a while for you. Airwork no longer exsists.

Never say NO ONE. This occurred when I worked for Stevens. The customer was doing the -41 to -42 STC.I parked my toolbox in 2004 and have NEVER looked back. Airwork needed to go out of business. 90% of our engines went to P&W-Atlanta/ Bridgeport, Aviall or Standard Aero. We had ONE customer send a -20B to Turbines,Inc. He could NEVER figure out WHY it ran 50 degrees hotter AFTER overhaul than before until it ate itself in the run-up area at BNA. There were bits and pieces of the power turbine and stator all over the left wing. They (Turbines,Inc.) didn't stake the roots on the turbine blades. They "grew" out of the hub, wore a grove into the stator and finally came all the way out trashing the whole engine in the process.

The STC's mods are a different animal. They only offer a factory reman, and use that "0" time deal as a selling point. Then they give you damn near nothing for your core. As most folks do the STC at overhaul time, they get about $5000.00 for their core.
I talked one customer out of doing a -52 or -60A mod last year and saved him over $400k. Just not worth putting almost $900k into a KA200 worth only $850k in today's market.... OK back on topic as this went way out there.

Well, I changed the oil filter to a Bosch. Inside the old oil filter, I found what I believe to be a piece of a lifter! Several months ago, I broke a two valve springs, a couple lifters, one of the pushrods was gone and the other was bent. I took care of that issue (replaced all the valves and valve springs), but I had thought anything that fell into the pan would have stayed at the bottom.
I'm at a bit of a loss as to what this means.

Hmm, forgot to mention that did I?
No, it did not. Pressure is still the same.

It really annoys me when we only get part of the story upfront, only to find out about important stuff like that later on. Makes everyone that tried to help look like complete idiots... Odds are this engine is FUBAR,good luck with it. Bret P. |

Just read this and was wondering how a piece of old lifter went through the pickup screen and survived the gears in the pump to end up in the filter. If it in fact went through the pump without locking it up, or breaking the driveshaft, or roll pin in the distributor drive gear (doubtful). If it did the pump could be trashed internally causing low oil pressure. A retainer clip is about the biggest thing I can envision going through the pump and screen.
I'd be leaning towards a stuck pressure relief ball myself especially if there's broken parts floating around in the oil pan, but only guessing at best, only one sure way to find out what is going on and that involves a lot of work. No mechanic in a can is going to fix this one. |

I guess it's time to pull the motor in any case, whether it's ruined all the bearings or just a stuck relief.

I always thought the pickup had a fine mesh screen. I'm surprised it made it through.
I'm curiouse what you find on the dissasembly. |

I've been watching along quietly in the background to see where this goes. Here is a pic of what can happen if a piece of hard metal trash gets sucked into the pump. No, the grooves in the rotor and bottom plate are not supposed to be there. My engine two years ago. Same sort of sudden drop in oil pressure as described here. It ran great for 1000+ miles before things went wrong. Damage was caused by a tiny piece of metal shot.
Sounds to me like this is a similar story. If you have exhausted all the simple possibilities then suggest that you pull the engine (glad I did!) Start by disassembling the pump and work your way through the bearings and see what you find. In my case I found more pieces of the metal shot in the oil pan which were obviously left in by the builder, so the engine was completely torn down and cleaned. No additional damage was found during the teardown. A new pump was installed and the oil pressure has been back to normal ever since.
