1969 trunk lid/tail lights/bumper alignment?
I have seen many pics on this site, ebay, internet etc, of the the rear view of a 1969 GTO and was wondering about overall alignment? I have seen some that look great and some that dont look quite right. I have included a pic (I hope not against the rules, taken from ebay) of a 69 and to me the light housings dont look parallel to the bumper or trunk lid edge. Are the light housings adjustable?

Wow. Yeah the back end of that car is all kinds of messed up.
It's likely a repro bumper as many have complained that they don't quite fit right. Even so there are several things here that can be adjusted to fit better. The trunk lid itself needs some adjustment to line up with the quarter, that's where I'd start. Next get the lights parallel to the trunk lid. There is a bit of slop in the bolt holes that will allow a certain level of adjustment. Last I'd play with that bumper for a while, I know I could get it to fit better than in that pic. Heck, it looks like the trunk lid is very nearly hitting it in the middle!

The repop bumpers do slope upward below the taillights but those TL housings are way out of whack. Goatless has it right - straighten them out first then go for best fit on the bumper. It won't be perfect but could be WAY better than that unless it's been hit. (I realize that is not your car)
I finally got tired of looking at mine and had my original bumper rechromed at 3X the cost of the repop; but you get what you pay for.

Maybe its a reproduction trunk lid.
Thanks a joke, btw. (goes back to trying to repair rotted out lid)

the car in the photo had a rear end hit in the middle at some point and the tail panel is pushed in and the body shop never bothered to pull it back properly.
If you want to get it right just pick up the 69 assembly manual, it has all the alignment specs for the back of the car. The factory 69 tail panel was a bit off, all 69 GTO's left the factory with the tail lights slightly slanted downwards towards the center of the car. This can be corrected with a SLIGHT enlargement of the four holes. Another issue like this is that the factory front valance, the passenger side parking lamps were all canted also. A good body man can deal with this.
