AND shot with a HF purple cap gun, nonetheless. I just saw this post today or surely would have posted on it before! I'm painting my car in my garage tomorrow morning and wish upon myself all the luck/skill you had.

I have a gun I bought at home depot (which is probably just a rebranded HF purple cap gun only twice as expensive) and i can lay down primer as well with that as I probably could with my "expensive" (devilbiss FL 3) gun.

Car looks great! Mine is in the body shop in year two, but we're starting to see the end. I can appreciate all your work just getting your temporary "booth" set up.

I am with GTOGreg, who are the "haters"?? Is this car on another website that people are commenting? What, exactly do they "hate"?

Haters:

Lots of people on the cruise lots knew that I was going to paint my car in my garage. A fair number of them had to remind me that they know what they are talking about, of course with me knowing nothing. They warned about the poor results of doing it in my garage, and I was better off to leave car the way it was. (I posted a picture of it here, and it wasn’t that shabby.) Also Macco would a much better job.

I’m on the lot just to hang out, not get into a pissing contest about what a fart smeller I am. Rather than a pissing contest, I left it alone. Surely you have been in a situation where you are the knowledge holder, and some idiot, who doesn’t have a clue what’s he’s talking about, tells you how wrong you are.

I was absent last year. I’m sure that when people asked where I was at, my buds say that’s he’s home painting his car. I can only guess, but it’s a safe bet that the know it alls couldn’t wait to see what it would look like.

I roll onto the cruise lot. Of course, everybody loved it. Comments from my buds ranged from I had no clue you had such a talent level to I knew you could pull it off, but I didn’t think it would look that nice.

On the other side: The “I know what I’m talking about’s” started walking over to look at the car. Once they saw me and realized it was my car, not fresh meat, they would do a 180 in the other direction; still, they refuse to look at the car. As well documented here, I don’t mind stirring up the coals to see what heat I can generate. I would approach them, making it impossible to not ‘notice’ me.

Oh, hey! What’sup.
I finished painting my car.
You did?
Yeah.
Where’s it at?
(WTF? It’s impossible to miss!)
Over there.
Oh, yeah, I see it.
Come over and take a look.

They do everything in their power to avoid eye contact with the car. Their mental image was how the car would look like if Macco painted, a total pos, and what it would look like done in a home garage. When they saw my car, it pissed them off. The frosting on the piss-off cake is “I KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT.” Whether or not they knew what they were talking about, it’s obvious they didn’t have a f/ing clue to whom they were talking!

At first, it bothered me some, but I had an epiphany. Everybody loving it is one level of achievement. Can it get any better than that? Yes. If looks so good that a number of people despise it, it’s a higher achievement than I could have imagined.

Good luck with diy body-paint projects. The thing to keep in mind is what you see required an absolutely insane amount of work, not something that was shot in someone’s garage on a Saturday afternoon. You need to sand and sand and sand and sand. Then sand some more. What you see is 100% prep-work. I have had at least 20 professional bodymen study my car closely. They make the same comment: Dude! You had to work your @$$ off to get it to that level. Yeah, it looks good but I paid for it with blood, and when your fingers bleed, you tape them up and keep sanding!

The tape on the finger tips reminds me when I was a kid (17) and worked at a production shop. One of the sanders had worked there for 30 years and he had no fingerprints. His finger tips were so sensitive that he had to put tape on his fingers to keep them from bleeding while he sanded. The guy was 6'5" and at least 300 lbs. and we called him Tiny.
