I was hoping the dry sump would solve your crank problem. Sorry it didn't go as planned. Now I guess I'll go ahead and fix the old engine and give it another shot. Might see you guys in Norwalk after all.

Sorry to hear about the main issues...same one we had last year. We had rod bearing issues in Phoenix. Congrats on the getting the signatures...the sigs were on your previous two six second passes? We'll hopefully try again next month if I can save up enough.

How did you solve the main bearing issue?

Our rod bearings have been totally trouble free.....contrary to what some of the nitro community normally expects. This is truly a baffling creature.

Eric & Mike- glad you're "safe and ready to do it again"!

I sure don't know anything about a fuel engine. But I'm curious about the setup- how 'loose' are the mains? Molasses (aka Nitro-70) for lube? What alloy is the crank? Rod side-clearances? 3" mains? "Babbit" type bearings? (I've forgotten the brand name- out of England- popular in blown-alky).

Back in the early sixties, I think it was C-T automotive that created a 'breakthrough' for fueler crank/bearing durability by hard-chroming the journals. It was still being done in the eighties; has it gone out of favor now?

...we're at .0055 on the mains. What kind of oil pressure are you guys at?

About the same main clearance in our bullet.
140 psi at idle, 190 psi during run
70-weight

#2 bearing is dead black. #3 bearing shows wear at the front edge only, suggesting the crank is flexing.

No, we'll be down for awhile. Next stop on the Boss Bird tour is Kil Kare on June 26. (1/8th mile)

Do the main bearings pretty much fall out of the cap when you take them off?

Slightly scored a couple mains. Fresh bearings and we try again tomorrow.

Ah...I just saw this. There really isn't a way to avoid damaging the bearings when this happens...there's too much fuel going into the engine, so it's not like we can get out of the throttle quick enough anyway.

Just curious are all you guys running fully counter weighted cranks?

Perspective from an old fat shade-tree..
Any Pump will loose efficiency if pushed passed 100% of what they are designed for.
Are the rods sucking/slinging oil away from the mains?

Y'all are the smartest Pontiac guy's on the planet. Get this thing figured out.

Now I'll sneak back to the street side.

Yes, bearing shell falls out of the cap when disassembled. When the bearing cools, it shrinks in at the parting line.

Using a Peterson R4 oil pump...well within it's capability. It can free-flow 42 gpm with the -20 suction line that we used. When we switched to the dry sump system, they stressed that the flow capacity was directly (and dramatically) related to the suction line size.

Fully counterweighted crank.

Default Bearing Damage

Eric, any ideas on why you're having main bearing issues? Nitro engines are somthing I no nothing about but geez that's a lot of oil pressure. I would think that's more than sufficient. Could it be running out of oil at the end of the 1/4 mile?
