HEI Distributor gear shimming?
Anyone know what the recommended and safe HEI distributor gear clearance should be? Some gearheads say .010-.020 and others say .020-.030. ? Don't want to shim too tight and grenade the oil pump/distributor gears.

I have found .050"-.070" on N.O.S. units.
Remember, up&down play is NO issue due to the helical gears pushing the distibutor gear against the wear shim at all times the engine is running. Itīs NOT like the shaft moves up&down with engine running. |

.020-.030 is fine. One thing I make sure is after its bolted down that you do have some up and down play. You dont want any downforce on the oil pump drive shaft.
