I wasn't getting any power assist at all, so I decided to get a reman PS pump. Aside from the swap being tedious (due to it being a long time since I've done one) it went fairly well, until I started the motor and no power assist. There's a Caddy PS cooler, which I disconnected to eliminate any problems, but still nothing, and even after filling the reservoir the fluid level doesn't go down. My question is, what are the symptoms of a failing power steering gear? Should I raise the car and bleed the system slowly, or is there a possibility that the gear is shot? The car sat for nearly 10 years with the steering gear ports open, so is it possible that there's a blockage in the gear? This thing is throwing me curve balls trying to get it back on the road, but apart from carburetion issues, the PS is the final thing that I have to address.

Check if the pressure hose is internally collapsed. Remove and used compressed air.

I'll try that this morning, although I put a new pressure hose on with the new pump.

Then probably not an issue. IIRC there is a toggle type fluid switch in the steering gear that applies fluid to either side of the worm gear. It could be stuck. Raise rpm's to 1500 and work the steering wheel with effort left and right trying to free it up. worth a shot.
Might get more good info if posted in the street section. Dont think any one would mind.

OK, I tried bleeding the system with the car on stands, the fluid level goes down, then comes up to the point it overflows the reservoir. I'm going to check the pressure hose to see if it's collapsed, but it is brand-new. I would seem to me that the pump is working but the fluid is being blocked. I'm just about ready to get rid of the car....I would just like one thing to go right, just once.
