The older Capitol Records albums, from "Magical Mystery Tour" (1967) on back, all used the Capitol "rainbow label", which was all black, with a rainbow band. When The Beatles formed Apple, they began re-releasing their older records using their new Apple label. If you have one of those, it may be a bit valuable. They weren't in production long.

Many of their 1964-1967 albums got a sales boost in late 1969 when the whole "Paul Is Dead" rumor started, and fans began buying their earlier releases looking for "clues" in their music. Sales of early albums skyrocketed, most of their early material was suddenly back on the charts, now spinning on the Apple label.

Capitol threw a ton of reverb on those early Beatles albums, which they called Duophonic. It was basically a Phil Spector type Wall Of Sound, and The Beatles hated it, but there was nothing they could do about it. Capitol Records was owned by EMI, the label The Beatles recorded for in England, and if Capitol felt this is how they should release their material in America, they had to accept it.

So Capitol felt The Beatles material needed a "boost", and they slathered on echo and reverb. The Beatles were still against stereo, and preferred mono (in their defense, mono does sound better on a single speaker car radio, where as a stereo mix would sound strange coming through a single speaker. The balance would be off, and the vocal may get buried in the mix).

I don't mind the Duophonic sound, but many hate it. As with all Beatles material, they of course re-released the Duophonic versions of the early U.S. Capitol albums a few years ago on CD and vinyl. Most fans in America remember them sounding this way, as that's all they ever heard of The Beatles throughout the 1960's to the later 1980's, when they began releasing true "non-reverb" recordings on CD.

what I am seeing, I believe, is that when you get off the mainstream favorites there is great quality old in the bins. The Pink Floyds, Beatles, Stones, etc are typically well played to hammered in the bins. But when you get into Mayall, Bruce, Papa John, you get music that probably was owned by someone with at least a decent platter they played on. Someone who had broader taste and probably loved their records. Someone who had "a collection" so Papa John actually was only played a few times. Kind of what I found this week, and I pick very picky, why not? Some very great shape oldies, so a great week with some oddity tid bits of gems for me, filled some holes in the collection for sure. The spiritual Dylan were like the only two missing Dylan's, so I actually "finished" an artist with them, and his mainstream USA catalog alone is huge..... prolific fellar....

Irony for the Digital vs Analog worth argument:

Boxed up 100+ CD's of mainly stuff I have replaced with vinyl and no longer really played. Had dozen box sets included in the bunch if counted discs probably 130+.... Couple years ago a friend sold box similar to pawn shop for good change.

Local Pawn Shop: "we quit buying them, nobody buys them"
Local Vinyl Store: "we quit buying them, market fell out about a year and a half ago."

So because my box was all choice blues, classic rock, and some great collector type music, he said he'd look thru and give me a store credit. So next week I'll find out $, I told him I didn't care.... (like helping out young fellow with his biz).

So anyone with a vast CD collection (was me) can relish that it has about no value
On the other hand, record collectors can put a 10 buck average per vinyl on their collection and get a wham bham low ballpark value (unless it is all Kenny Rogers)

My old CD collection bought at 5K went to $0.
My record collection bought at 2K maybe went to 6K.

Math is fun at times.

Handed over my CD collection to my brother years ago who has space an interest in it. Went 100% digital for a few years - now I'm back to my roots rummaging through the crates at Rasputin, Amoeba and antique stores.

This week's acquisitions: Pink Floyd/Obscured By Clouds, Ten Years After/A Space In Time (wife's pick ) and a '76 reissue of Nuggets on the Sire label.



I set up a Marantz 2220b and a Dual turntable at work a while back. We had a going away party for a young guy at work last week and I bought a bunch of albums in - core stuff like Beatles, Doors, Who, Zeppelin. Had so much fun seeing the reaction of folks who've never seen or heard the originals before. The classics are called classics for a reason

Waiting on my reconed woofers to come back to enjoy music again. Pretty excited. The old ones before they totally blew would not play real loud as amp has circuit protection that reads speakers and shuts down when blown or bad. Kinda techy for 1980 or so. So we expect loudability Trying to decide on best test vinyl when they arrive. Thinking Cream or Mountain.

I've been able to convert a few from current tweet tweet boom boom to the classics. I even run into some kids who have never heard of Led Zeppelin or the Doors. Whole 'nother matter when they're exposed to it.

Space In Time (And Cricklewood Green) on my GET List but when I find them they are always hammered, people dug and played 'em........... had both senior year of HS so big memory albums.

I hear you on condition. My copy of A Space in Time is pretty nice, but the sleeve for Cricklewood has seen some action. The vinyl is primo though and that's what really matters to me.

A lot of times if I have the hankering for a particular album I get lazy and buy a graded copy off eBay. Although it's fun to sift through the bins, there's a lot of beat up copies of stuff in the record stores.

I found a great little shop over near Berkeley where the owner takes a lot of care in selecting clean copies for in his bins. The selection is smaller than most stores, but the quality makes up for it. He's usually a few bucks cheaper than other places too
