My son out in CA called me about this. He has a '99 Ford F350 that has a severe clunk in the driveline when shifting into gear. He said he has a little vertical slop in the pinion (up/down) of the rear end,and some slop in and out of the pinion. Also he has a touch of slop up and down in the slip yoke. I told him if this was a GM rear, for sure it is junk,but-
OK,never having owned,or rebuilt a Ford rear end,I ASSUME this is no good,Correct? ![]() He said he thinks it as a 10.5 rear,if that helps. Thanks.

Is the big nut tight? Has anyone recently put a pinion seal in?

I'd have to ask him about the pinion nut. He just bought the truck not too long ago,so we don't know if the seal has been replaced.

Just talked to him,he said he didn't know if the pinion nut is tight or not,and seeing as how I don't think the Ford has a pinion bearing pre-load/crush sleeve like a GM,I told him not to touch it until I find out more info on the Ford rear end set up.
Thanks for any help.

Clunk when put in gear can also be the U-joints.
Slop in/out is not good.

He said U-joints are tight.
I FIGURED the pinion slop was not good, but he said it's maybe just a few .001". Just not a Ford guru on this end. Thanks Boss.

U joints can appear to be tight, and still be a problem. Have they been taken apart, and inspected?

All I drive are F350 Duallys ...
He needs to take it to a shop that has EXPERIENCE replacing rear differentials. It is not a " do it yourself " diagnosis or repair. Jim

hey gents (said son here),
Thanks for all of the input, ended up getting a new slip yoke from a local driveline shop as part stores couldn't even order the part and that solved the noises, the splines were extremely warn when i separated it due to a lack of grease, so it would bounce all over while coasting |
