I need an honest number on the worth of a 1968 RA I 4 speed. Non numbers, has 69 firebird 400 in it now, has its original exhaust manifolds, comes with 31 heads, late 68 SR 4 bolt block, original 4:33 gears, great daily driver quality. Older resto that looks like it started with almost rust free body. Was originally nightshade green now that dark red burgundy color.

On that search engine, I believe the RA-I would be the 'HO' or just the 'RA' option. A RAII is a whole different can of worms and is pretty much top dollar for a '68 GTO...which, by the way, in base form it is one of the cheaper GTOs years in general. In fact, next to the '73~'74 models, probably the lowest valued model.

I would say yes, they are the red-headed step child...I think that scale is a bit high. No way I can see a #4 '68 GTO going for $29Gs. I could be wrong though. If that's accurate, I need to up my coverage...Hey..maybe that's the idea, huh Hagerty?..

Sorry missed that in Hagerty. 68s are definitley step children but that is what I like about them.
As discussed on this forum many times the 68s just don’t bring the money of the 69. My opinion and I’m not well versed in the specialty car market but maybe 20% over a what a standard 69 GTO in like condition might be a guide??

I would have thought a RA I would be looked at in higher regard. I had a mildly modified RA I firebird 4 speed. It's not just a warmed over D port with fresh air. It was way quicker than any other 400 I've been in. I've not had the privilege of a ride in a RA ii or iv but it would blow the doors off my 71 TA 455HO.

The RA cars are going to fetch a premium, I was just stating that the 68s just aren’t appreciated as much as later RA cars.

From a motor perspective, the RAIs were basically a warmed up 400 D-port. The big difference was the 3.90 (firebird) or 4.33 (GTO) rear. That will scoot any car along quickly. The motor had a longer duration cam and carb and distributor tuning to work with the tall gearing. I like the 67-68 RA cars as they were the race package prior to RAIIs coming out in late 68. Sounds like a neat car.

Wish it was different as I think they are one of the coolest cars made but the 68 RA1 GTO does not seem to draw much attention when they do come up.

Now the RA1 68 FBs seem to be real popular. RAII’s are in a different class.

Based on the few 68 RA1 GTO projects and cars sold over the years, maybe 10-15% over a comparable HO. (yet the 68 ra block and heads are nuts in value)

Just to start the ball rolling on the original question...and it's just an opinion...I would expect from your description to pay in the mid to upper 20s for a car like that with non original engine, non original color, etc. in the driveline.
Personally, I don't mind the disrespect '68s get..Makes them a bit more attainable.

I know some people go gaga over round ports cars. I think RAI cars are just as cool. I have 4 RAI birds, two round port birds and a deuce GTO. I do not covet the round ports more. A project could bring up to $30k.

A '67 RAI GTO sold at auction for $160k. "Bossman", the Royal RAI with a 428 almost printed $195k. RA cars are very special, regardless of the shape of the ports. A project could bring up to $30k.

Aside from "Bossman". A very nicely restored RAI could bring six figures. Look at Jim Mattison's RA I GTO. I'd bet a dollar to a donut his will bring close to 100k and it would be deserved. I heard he may soon sell it.

My own experience has been that the RA I 68's get fewer dollars than the RA III 69's (non Judges of course) and only slightly more than a standard 350hp engine 68. There have been a few cars which have gotten high dollars but very few and the others, although rare and cool with their factory 4:33's, just don't make the money.

This is definitely a case of if you like it, pay what it's worth to you, but don't buy it because you think you'll make a high return on it.

Oh and the birds get bigger dollars than the goats - no idea why.

How much did Mattison's dark blue RAII bring? I seem to recollect that it was a little under appreciated by the bidders...and that car was everything I dream of in a '68 GTO.
