Default Fuel Pump

I had my car running in the garage, and I thought I ran out of gas, as it stalled out. The fuel gauge was near emty, so I put 5 gallons in it. I tried to start it and it would not turn over. I checked for spark at the number one plug and I have spark. I believe the fuel pump went bad. Is there anything else I should check before I take the fuel pump out? The fuel pump is at least 28 years old and I would not be shocked if it was the original. Thanks, Marc.

Take air cleaner lid off, look down carb and move throttle to see if it squirts.

Sounds like a fuel pump failure, diaphragm ripped or spring or pin on pivot let go. I’ve had the best luck with spectra premium pumps, Canadian made versus China. I gave up on nos GM pumps because they seem to have high failure rate, maybe just old diaphragms or not ethanol friendly.

The other thing that can mimic a pump failure is the cam eccentric coming lose and shearing its pin. More common on recently rebuilt engines rather than untouched engines.

Thanks guys. Since I am there I might as well change the rubber hoses that are there. I believe the fuel line ls 3/8 and should get the green clamp and the return line is 1/4 and should be the red clamp. I am not sure which pump to order now. Does the Spectra pump look like the factory model? I think it is number SP1046MP. I usually get the factory stuff when I can. I think the one in the catalog N128RC is (AP) after product. Thanks, Marc.

The spectra pumps I’ve bought for my cars (69 with AC so includes a return line) look like a Delco pump. I don’t mean they are exact to the dimples but the look stock and all the fittings are bang on so no fitment issues with the steel line to the carb.

If you’re doing the rubber hoses there might be a good time to do the ones at the he tank too.

Finally changed the fuel pump. Started it up, then the accelerator pump on the carb started leaking. Maybe I will get the car driving before we get some snow. Time for a carb rebuild.

So I changed the fuel pump and had the carb rebuilt everything was great. I was driving around fine then the fuel gauge started to act up, it was buried past full. I figured it was the ground wire by the tank, so I got a wire brush and cleaned all around it, but that did not work. I thought I had 5 gallons in the tank but I was wrong. Ran out of gas in the street. I had to call my wife to bring me my fuel jug,(which she will never let me forget). I dropped the tank thinking the ground wire was broke off, but it was good. Any suggestions before I put it back. I do not have the tar paper in between the tank and the vent tube looks like it does not have the filter in it anymore. So I am going to order those. I would love to complain, but this is my baby and everything is about 50 years old. Thanks, Marc.

In Canada all the main auto parts chain carry them but you have to ask by name. Spectra does most of the repro gas tanks too. I’m sure most major auto parts chains have n your area carry them. Maybe try summit too, often cheaper than the local auto parts place.

I went right on the Spectra website and I think I paid something like $12 for the fuel pump. It was the cheapest price around. Marc.

Don, do you think that is the issue I am having with the fuel gauge, or do say to change the sending unit because the tank is out already. Thanks, Marc.
